leadoff...obp+speed...whatever position it ends up being.

come on

come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

I think at this point he's just giving the people what they want. I would have been disappointed if that post hadn't been on the first page of this thread.

you're a one trick pony
does piling on make you feel better? It's funny how some go w/ the masses when it comes to opinion so they can achieve high school-like popularity. Since this is a message board where everyone is anonymous, popularity is irrelevant to me. I'm all in favor of trading Derek Lee for a middle of the order lefty as well. I just happen to think Soriano is an overpaid, one dimensional player that has never performed in the clutch. Since he is handled w/ such kid gloves & plays at such an important postion as a catalyst to the lineup & eats up so much contract...& we are now in the offseason, it is a hot topic once again. A majority of articles i've seen & radio shows i've heard, talk mainly about the handling of soriano.

Really? We had no idea you felt that way.

Anyways, I'd say the majority of the people on this board agree with what you just said.

I have 2 questions for you.

1) If Soriano leading off is so crippling to an offense, then how did the Cubs lead the NL in runs this season?

2) The Phillies have gotten a .250 .288 .429 line out of the leadoff spot this postseason. How can they possible be one win away from a title? I bet that blows your mind. BTW, the AL Champion Rays have gotten .258 .333 .403 out of the leadoff spot in the playoffs.

Look dude, we get it. I think most people here would agree that Soriano is a frustrating player with a terrible contract. The problem is that you're drastically overemphasizing the importance of a leadoff hitter. Seriously guy, it's not that important.

how is my posting on soriano any worse than you (derwood) piling on every time i do? there is a chic trib article that talks about the Cubs' biggest targets/needs in the offseason. Not surprisingly, one of the few mentioned is obtaining a leadoff hitter. Hmmm

Which position (pitcher excluded) would you most like to see upgraded this offseason?

General Manager, but we whiffed on that one.

Aligning yourself with Paul Sullivan isn't going to convince anyone on this board that your opinions are correct. In fact, it will do just the opposite. Just an FYI.

Nearly as predictable as wrigley23.

But much more correct.

My mom lets me take the laptop upstairs for dinner before I go back down. She used to just send me the food down the laundry chute but she says it's good for me to get some color.

You deserve whatever crap you get on this board b/c you bring it upon yourself w/ posts like this.

Then why is he always wrong?

I'm going to say SS and RF. I would say 1B as well, but I think DLee is going to have a bit of a resurgence after his disappointing year last year. Not a 2005 type of resurgence, but maybe 27-32 HRs, 40-45 2Bs, .300BA, .400 OBP...

And why is he the one who actually looks like he hasn't emerged from a basement in 20 years?

Then you'd think he'd have a history of being half-way right every once in awhile? The results from the last decade certainly don't back that up like they do with some of the other Chicago beat reporters. Some reporters get a bad wrap for breaking one or two stories before they go through, then look bad when they collapse...see the other Bruce. Sullivan gets a bad wrap because he consistently writes stuff that ends up proving to be garbage in the end.

ok...so...several of you have conversations w/ Lou Piniella & Jim Hendry as well as various Cub players on a regular basis...or...ever? OK...gotcha.

it's actually more embarrassing that that idiot is as stupid as he is when it comes to baseball considering he's around the team on a day-to-day basis

I am very bored right now and I was arguing this with a guy at a wedding the other night (btw...this guy said he wants Peavy bad, yet wouldn't trade Samardzija for him...huh??), anyways:

Which position (pitcher excluded) would you most like to see upgraded this offseason?

I would like to see SS upgraded. Not sure how that choice will fair around here, but here's why; I am not a Ryan Theriot fan. He had a very solid year and I ate some crow along the way, but I just don't want him at SS in '09. Now obviously if the Cubs could acquire someone like Tex, Holliday or Manny I would enjoy that very much and would take those upgrades over SS, but I just don't see that happening.

With a lineup of Ramirez, Sori, Soto and DLee (should combine for close to 110 HR's), I can live with Fuku/Reed/Pie/Theriot/DeRosa/Hoff P and a very solid starting SS. I really want to shore up the middle of this team's defense and there is no better place to do it than SS. There's some idiots on this team and a leader out there could really do some good IMO. I definitely am not advocating punting a lineup spot, thinking Orlando Cabrera or Furcal (those guys aren't on huge bat levels by any means).

Opinions? What's your choice?

Good Morning,

After reading the entire thread I see things a bit differently. I personally would try to sign Roberts, or a good switch hitting or left handed leadoff man (excluding Pierre). It appears to me that we really need to find some energy for the lineup. Sure we scored a lot of runs but........ A good leadoff man gets on base a lot, steals a lot of bases and truly is a table setter. That is not Soriano.

Personally I like Theriot a lot. He is a gamer and I think he will get better. For what it is worth he had 68AB's as a leadoff hitter last year, hit .368 with and OBP of .419. What really irked me was that Soriano had a hold on that spot and, even though common sense says he should be hitting 5th or 6th, they never let Theriot continue there.

I also think Fukudome is going to be a bust so we really need a full time CF and RF. I would go get the leadoff man first, see where he plays then make adjustments. For example if we get Roberts, then DeRosa moves to the OF and now we just need one more OF.

Pie ain't gonna make it and he is out of options. My fear is he will be another Corey Patterson. Would not bother me in the least if we traded him for Roberts or Coco Crisp.
