We need to be adding relievers, not subtracting them. I love Woody and I don't want him to go. He's only what...31? 3 years isn't a huge commitment. Him and Marmol are the only two guys outta that pen I ever felt safe with when on the mound.

Samardizja(sp?) isn't even a reliever. He did a pretty good job of pretending to be a setup man for awhile, but he's a starter. Let's not even talk about Howry. Neal Cotts is worthless and frankly, I'm not a big fan of Marshall either, as a starter or a reliever. He reminds me of Ted Lilly (who I also dislike). I'd use him as trade bait. I think Gaudin is pretty average. He can be good but he's not consistent. We should have never traded Scott Eyre. He wasn't even pitching bad. I wouldn't mind seeing Wuertz get a chance, it doesn't seem like we ever stuck with him long enough.

In summary, our bullpen needs alot of work and if we let Woody go we're only making the problem worse.

I'd be curious to know your reasoning for this.

Me too. Ted Lilly has been solid for the Cubs.

Marshall hasn't exactly pitched like Howry either.

because he... like... gives up home runs and junk. unacceptable

As far as Lilly... yes, the homers are part of my reasoning. He also isn't much for velocity, and I think if you don't throw hard, you need to have the control to make up for it. His control is pretty average at best. All he has going for him is a curveball that moves alot. In general, I just feel that he is way too inconsistent. His numbers have been comning out decent, but I think they are somewhat misleading. Seems like he either goes out and pitches shutout baseball, or he gets shelled and knocked out of the game in the second inning. I don't really mind him as a 4th or 5th starter, but he's not a top of the rotation guy. We started the season with him in the #2 slot and I was outraged.

As a Cub, 1 start allowing 0 runs. 0 starts knocked out in the 2nd inning or earlier.

Why are you using facts to support your argument SSR?

That's not fair, and facts don't tell the story like memories and gut feelings.

Percentage of starts going at least 6 innings, 2008

Johan Santana: 91%

Cole Hamels: 87%

Dan Haren: 87%

Tim Lincecum: 85%

Brandon Webb: 82%

Jake Peavy: 81%

Ted Lilly: 79%

Ryan Dempster: 75%

Ben Sheets: 74%

Chad Billingsley: 69%

Edinson Volquez: 66%

The names on this list are Lilly and the Top 10 in NL ERA+. Lilly doesn't seem to be appreciably worse than the best of the best at staying in games, and as the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th(please Rich Hill) best starter, it's probably pretty great.

Guess this doesn't count the game he was immediately thrown out of? That call was a joke, but still came to mind offhand as a game where he didnt make it through the 2nd. Anyhow....I am a big Lilly fan as I love K's. Yeah, he gives up a lot of HRs, but so does Santana. I think we'll get another solid year out of Ted this coming year, that is unless we trade him (which might be a decent option as one of our few vets with positive value).

The first two months Lilly was awful, I have no idea why his velo was down but as he pitched into the year, it seemed to get back into the 88-92 range and he improved as the season went on. Him and Dempster carried that team late to clinch the division.

It seemed as his FB went up in velo he ised his change-up less espec. vs. RH'ers which was odd.

Well if I counted that, then he'd have 2 starts allowing 0 runs as well. It'd be pretty ridiculous to count that game as meaning anything, unless it's his theory that Lilly is a loose cannon ready to be thrown out of a game at any moment.

Outraged? The guy had four bad starts to begin the season. You know what he did in his last 30 starts?

17-6, 3.58 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 8.23 K/9, .231 BAA

He's gone 32-17 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in two seasons as a Cub. Tough to find much fault with that.

And I'm still curious why you don't like Marshall. He did just about everything asked of him this year.

When Lilly is bad he was really bad last year, and if anything I think that has mislead some fans. When a pitcher gets bombed as bad as Lilly does when he doesn't have it, it makes you forget quickly that he was pretty good in 6-8 starts in a row before that. Take away Lilly first three starts, when he had nothing. Then on April 17th he gave up 6 runs in 6 IP.

But after that start he threw 4 quality starts in a row and was solid in 3 starts after those. Then on May 30th he gave up 7 runs(4 ER) against the Rockies in 3 innings. But after that he threw 6 outta 7 quality starts, and in his non quality start he went 7 IP and gave up 4 ER. Of course then on July 10th he gave up 4 ER in 2.2 IP and got bombed again. Then after that start he threw 8 of 9 quality starts, and his one non quality start was 4 ER in 6 IP. Then again on September 5th, Lilly gave up 5 ER in 2 IP, and we all know how good Lilly was his final four starts of the season. So anybody who doesn't think Lilly is that good, or is inconsistent your just reminded too much of his bad games. But when you look at the numbers Lilly was really good from April 17 to the rest of the year besides four starts.

I can't imagine Wood playing for any other team.

But then again, I felt the same about Brett Favre. :-))
