Basically what Rogers is suggesting is the Cubs sign Manny and move Soriano leaving them with the same financial situation but, effectively trading Soriano for Manny. Given Manny' enormous baggage and the fact he could go off should someone so much as look at him funny. I still would have a tough time saying no to a Manny for Soriano trade.

I would have no problem with saying no to any type of deal that would bring Manny "Mr. Drama Queen" to the Cubs. He is a great player, as long as he's happy. But like you say, if someone looks at him funny, that's it, game over. I think one head case per team is the limit, and the Cubs already have Zambrano. They don't need another one.

First, it's speculation by Rogers of all people. He knows nothing and his "rumors" are weeks behind any legitimate site. Secondly, do you think the Cubs would commit the money and years to accommodate an aging superstar who acts like a spoiled 7-year-old? Finally, do you think there's anyone crazy enough to take on Soriano's contract without sending us an equally ridiculous contract?

I can't see a scenario where someone takes Soriano. I don't think we could give him away, and eat 50% of his salary. I just can't see it.

The biggest hole, as UMFAn pointed out, is getting rid of Soriano in a favorable deal. I don't think there are many teams who could or would take on his contract. If we have to pay someone to take Soriano off our hands, then the move to get Manny doesn't make much sense.

Manny is a better hitter, but he comes with considerably more baggage. Soriano is probably a better defender, but both have issues defensively. Manny is older, though, Soriano's contract is going to look bad in a few years if his skills continue to decline. If all things were equal, I'd take Manny's probable production for 2009 over Soriano's.

At this point, I don't see the Cubs and Soriano parting ways.

The lazy disgruntled Manny that still hit .299 .398 .529 .927?

There's nobody on earth that says Manny can't hit, it's just the lazy, disgruntled part gets in the way. For the short spurts of time that Manny is motivated and paying attention, he is probably the best hitter in baseball. It's keeping him interested and motivated for more than two weeks at a time that is the problem, especially with a guaranteed $20 million contract per year for 3-6 years.

Manny is also 36 years old. How many good years does he really have left in him? I'm thinking 1-2 MAX. No thanks on Manny. We should have got him years ago when he was available through waivers, not now when he's 36.

I wouldn't say that Soriano's skills are diminishing - I'd say he has been dealing with a few injuries. He is the same streaky hitter that he has always been, and he still puts up numbers. You just better hope that he is hot at the right time.

I saw this article a couple of days ago and was totally confused by it. It says not to discount the chance of the Cubs going for him if they can get the Dodgers to take back some of the guys the Cubs owe a lot of money too. Why would the Dodgers acquire some of the Cubs big salaries just so the Cubs can sign one of the Dodgers big free agents?

Jim Hendry: "Hi, Ned. Listen, we want to sign Manny away from you, but to do that we're going to need to get creative. We need to figure out a way for you to acquire a couple of our big contracts so we have the flexibility to sign him. I think if you take Soriano and Fukudome we can get the deal done."

Ned Coletti: stunned silence.

JH: "Listen, if you are going to drive a hard bargain I'll let you take on Derrek Lee's contract too."

NC: Hangs up phone.

You're forgetting this is Ned Coletti we're talking about. It would probably go more like...

Rogers thought they might do a sign-and-trade deal like basketball.

Then he's an even bigger idiot than previously thought. There are no sign and trades in baseball.

Not exactly like the NBA, but comparable (admittedly rare) deals do happen. Bronson Arroyo to the Reds would be a recent example.

Yeah, that's just what we need. Another lazy ramirez who wont hustle around the bases. All those stats don't mean jack when you've got laziness like the Ramirez cousins on the basepaths. PASS.
