I guess we are racist AND fickle now. Oh and we have potty mouths....

The ugliest breakup in sports just happened. And that "It's Gonna Happen" mantra has turned into a "It's Never Gonna Happen" belief and a "We Don't Give a $%&* If It Ever Happens" feeling.

Obscene gestures, followed by obscenities. So many obscenities. "I can't think of an obscene word that describes how obscene they played," another ex-fan said, after dropping an f-bomb.

Phone calls and e-mails poured in. One read: "Man, (expletive) the Cubs! Forever! I'm done with them! Sorry sons of (expletive). Unless Mark Cuban buys them. That's the only way. … I hope the (expletive) Cubs burn in hell!"

Or, as lifelong-but-no-longer Cubs fan Andre Curry said, "They need players that can play in October, (expletive) April."

i think this is a little over the top. Yes, I am unbelievably upset about the playoff results, as are all Cub fans. I think it is a bit much to say the city has given up on them. I will admit it, I cried with Soriano struck out on that check swing to end the year, but I am looking forward to next year as much as ever. It's an unconditional love.

I don't think it's THAT over the top. If you polled reaction on this board and throughout the city, you'd get a lot of that same reaction. I know that I mirrored a lot of those thoughts.

We'll see if this carries over to next year. If they continue winning, it will change nothing. If they struggle out of the box, you'll get people saying "See this is why I gave up on them."

Overall, we'll get the same pattern that emerges every year.

I'm wondering how this year will affect attendence figures next year. After being spoon fed "team of destiny" and "this is the year" slogans all season, and having the postseason end so abruptly and painfully without a single moment to cherish two years in a row now, have fans finally had enough?

As painful as the end of 2003 was, I think fans showed up for 2004 was because there were some great wins during the 2003 postseason. This is not true at all for the last two years.

Fans haven't "had enough". Attendence was up because there was hope of the future based on the previous season's success. If the Cubs look to be solid next season, attendence will be as high or higher than this year.

I totally agree. They'll sell out the season again.

What I do think we'll see is a heightened sense of... not sure what the word is, maybe fickleness or impatience or intolerance for non-success. I think the boo's are going to come out much quicker and the team, especially certain player (Soriano) are going to have very short leashes in the fans' minds.

Yeah, I don't think Wrigley is going to be a fun place for the home team to play at next year. I could be wrong though. The fans mentality right now won't be the same as their mentality 6 months from now.

I cant believe there is 6 months until the next Cubs game. This is such a cruel sport.

Perhaps, but that was already the case. I think a lot of people were hoping to avoid the actual 100 year thing, thinking 1908-2008 and all that was a sign or something. If the team fails to play well early, I could see more booing than usual, but if they are good, people will get right back on teh bandwagon. In the long run, it doesn't matter much if they win it after 97 years, 100 years or 104 years. If they continue to capitalize on their resource advantage, they will continue to be good and fans will come out in hopes of seeing a winner.

I honestly hope the Cubs walk in with another 85-win team or something and then have success in the playoffs. We won't have so many bandwagoners for the entire season. I think Cubs fans are tired and ticked right now, but I don't think that the die-hards have been portrayed all that well in the last five days or so. Even though it would almost guarantee I couldn't get playoff tix, I wish they would do it the old way, with a long line wrapping around Wrigley the day after they clinch the division. I think that will curtail a lot of the junk we saw Wednesday night with the dead crowd.

Bandwagon fans are a sports franchise best friend.

why in the world would someone email scoop jackson after a cubs game

This is what I'm wondering. Perhaps they emailed some Chicago newspaper columnists or Cub officials who gave Scoop the scoop ( ).

I'm not reading the article, reading that quote alone depresses me enough.

This article presents pretty much the exact opposite picture of Cubs fans...

http://www.sportsline.com/columns/story/11012421

Ray Ratto[/url]"]We fully intended this day to put the boot into Cubs fans for their incessant whingeing about curses and chokes and 100-year waits and how the team doesn't deserve its fan base and all the other post-NLDS topics.

But an odd thing happened between Saturday night and Monday morning. Cubs fans went silent. They chose to drink in private, and grouse to each other rather than making us feel their pain. They behaved the way fans should behave at times like this -- like sullen, embittered grumblers who just want to be left alone.

Good article, doesn't make me feel any better though.
