The premise of Lou conceding the series is an interesting one. Could play mind tricks on LA a bit. Tell them how great they are, etc, maybe you catch them looking past us and believing it.

Or the Dodgers will continue to clean the Cubs' clock. There would be a run to the bat rack. Harden deserves this start and not to give it to him is a fireable offense.

The Dodgers haven't cleaned anyone' clock, I refuse to give them credit beyond not playing as poorly as the Cubs. All they've done is be the beneficiaries of some bad Cub Baseball, nothing more.

They've taken walks and hit homeruns and other extra base hits. They've won big because of the Cubs being stupid, but they've still played well enough to win without all the help.

Ths sounds like the worst idea ever.

Because what they're doing is working so well.

My annual salary is in the low $40k range. I really wish I made six figures and could afford a nicer car, and maybe buy a house sometime soon.

Clearly, what I am doing has not been working. So it's time to try something new. Something wacky. Today, in my afternoon meeting, I am going to punch my boss in the throat and take a dump on the overhead projector. I will then hurtle my body down a flight of stairs while singing the chorus to "Shiny, Happy People" by REM. Once I hit the bottom, I will spring up and shout "TA DA!" and spread my arms wide in triumph.

Maybe then my fortunes will turn.

If you knew you were about to lose your job anyway, those might be perfectly reasonable things to do. The point is, they have nothing to lose at this point so they may as well start acting like it.

Exactly. Why should they try harder now? They all have jobs next year with this team, except for a few. What pressure is there exactly to perform? The only ones who really look like they give a damn are Zambrano, DeRosa, and Theriot, as far as regulars go.

I wasn't agreeing with the not starting Harden stuff, just throwing some stuff out that you know the media will eat up. Kind of "reverse bulletin board material." Not a real large chance it makes any difference, but its an interesting idea that could be worth a shot (I mean what do you have to lose).

An elimination game.

We have the series to lose no matter what we do.

Whether you decide you are going to approach the game the same you approached the other two, or you decide you are going to play mind tricks on the other team, or play mind tricks on your own guys, or try to fire your own guys up, or rub your stomach and pat your head. No matter what you do the series is on the line.

good point, so let's start jason marquis instead of rich harden and run bat boys out onto the field in cubs uniforms between innings to try and trick the dodgers into losing

I've already admitted that not starting Harden was over the top. But I really do think the idea of embracing the "curse" as a way of taking pressure off the players could have some merit. "We all know we're gonna find some way to blow this thing anyway, but we have to play the games so what are you gonna do". Think the "Dread Pirate Roberts" from "Princess Bride": "Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning".

I'm not joking and I'm pretty sure I'm not [expletive]. Have some fun with this thing or it's never going to happen.

No that would be stupid because it would make us a worse baseball team. Anything Lou wants to say beforehand though won't change our talent though. The 0.05% chance it psychs out the Dodger's though is an interesting idea worth discussing.

I keep thinking of the movie Office Space. Yes it's a movie, but who wouldn't love to just say you know what, to hell with this. I'm gonna die sometime in the next 70 years and this is just ridiculous, let's have some fun with it. I don't know if the OP's plan is the way to do this, but if Lou just went into a press conference and did something unexpected, and the team just REALLY stopped caring so much about winning and concentrated more on enjoying what they are a part of... then maybe something else would happen.

Excellent, thank you. It's like the stakes are so high they're paralyzed with fear. And telling them to "man up" only makes it worse. And movies are usually popular because there's at least a kernel of truth in there, otherwise people wouldn't relate.

Professional baseball is exactly like the movies.

Id like to know how Theriot looks like he cares? Was it half assed defense last night that showed this?

You could see the anger in his eyes when he turned and walked to the dugout on the dropped strike 3 that got by Martin.

Ahh damn, I missed that. All I know is if that was Theriot playing like he cares, I hope he plays the next game like he doesnt care.
