The Cubs appear poised to offer manager Lou Piniella a contract extension at the end of the season. The team already has had preliminary talks with him, but the issue has been tabled until the offseason, Cubs chairman Crane Kenney said.

General manager Jim Hendry also might be in line for an extension.

''Lou's done a great job here,'' Kenney said. ''We look around the league, and there isn't anybody else I'd rather have in the dugout right now than Lou. And I think he feels good about what's happening.

''But it's a grind. Making decisions with two weeks to go, I don't think it's a smart thing to do, and I think they would agree with me. Let's get the job done, and then we'll address it.''

Kenney and the Cubs also telling potential bidders what they expect the payroll to be next season:

Kenney, Hendry and the rest of the Cubs' management team are going through management presentations with the five bidders, showing each group the team's plans for next season along the way.

''Right now, in any season, we would be already working on a budget for next year, so we are showing each one of the bidders what our projection is for payroll and sort of where we want to address some of our needs,'' Kenney said.

I didn't really think he'd be interested in sticking around longer than his current contract though. I could see him winning the World Series this year and then calling it a career. There's not a better way to go out than leading the Cubs to their first title in a century!

Why would they show budget plans to five bidders if Ricketts group already has it in the bag? I'm so confused....

Wait, what? I must've missed something... when did this come out?

It didn't.

I don't care what Lou does if they win it all. I don't care what anyone does. I probably won't for at least a few years.

It'll take me at least 2, 2.5 years to sober up.

I seriously cannot imagine truly being too frustrated with anything Cubs for about 2-3 years after they win. The same holds true for any of my teams really, but the Cubs especially for obvious reasons.

I'd like to say that I wouldn't get frustrated if the Cubs won the World Series this year and made some dumb moves afterward, but I know I would. And I'm sure some of you would be too even though you say you wouldn't.
