With 1 more walk by Geovany Soto, the 2008 Cubs will have 6 players with over 60 walks on the season (including the entire IF, which has to be a first). In comparison, the Cubs only have two 60 walk seasons in the last 3, both Derrek Lee in 2005 and 2007. Nobody on the 06 Cubs walked more than Aramis Ramirez's 50!

The Red Sox have not had 6 players over 60 walks in recent history. And we are talking about a team that had all 9 regulars with at least 47 walks in 05 and 07 (5 over 70 in 07). A really fast search shows that only the 05 Yankees recently, have had 6 players walk 60 times in the same season (Giambi, Arod, Sheff, Matsui, Posada, Jeter).

CUBS are on a pace to draw 646 walks this year..... compared to 500 last year and 395 in '06 and 419 in '05

when you get 1.5 more guys on base per game via the walk than you did 2 years ago, your offensive production is gonna go way up.

lou has been an upgrade over dusty in just about every way imaginable, except for ability to fish and chew on toothpicks, while hendry has made much better personnel decisions over the past couple of years, but nothing is more important than this organization's epiphany that getting on base is a good thing.

They also lead the league in SLG.

But that's not really all that new. It's not a sign of how different this team is from the Dusty years. They were 2nd in the NL in SLG in 2004 and 2005, yet the team wasn't that good.

The walks are notable because of how different it is from the bad years, when they were obviously the problem that nobody in charge paid attention to or cared about.

Oh I don't disagree; just saying they were 8th and 10th in SLG the last two years so the offensive resurgence is a robust one.

I think that can mostly be attributed to Lou and the coaching staff, though.

Yeah, this is what I hoped for when Lou hired Gerald Perry as the hitting coach. Perry had a track record. I don't think it can be considered a coincedence by any means.

It's not called walking.

The 90's Yankees didn't lead the league in walks.

The highest scoring offense in the national league this year doesn't lead the league in walks.

You ever see a top 10 for walking?

It's like in little league when you send the smallest kid up there hoping he gets a walk.
