I have tickets to Saturday and Sunday's game. Don't sweep.

Obviously the Cubs are going to win the division no matter what, but this is the same mentality that I heard before Game 5 of the NLCS in 2003. People debated the Cubs losing Game 5 so they could win at home. Sorry that you might not be able to see them clinch in person, but you should be cheering for the Cubs to win every game until it doesn't matter anymore.

In 03, I was driving to Atlanta while Game 4 was being played. I honestly was totally torn about what to root for in that game. I wasn't crushed when they lost, but I did want them to win.

In retrospect it hurts, but people had these visions of the ultimate celebration at Wrigley, and you could taste it. I don't think I blame anyone for wanting to see it.

I was all set to drive down and join the party.

I drove from Champaign for Game 7 and drove back after.

Worst 3 hours ever.

At least in the NLCS we were coming home and only had to win one. How could you be torn at all considering we hadn't won a series since what 45? And we had to go on the road against the team with the best record in the NL to win the series.

Because I had tickets to game 5 and I was driving there to see the game?

I guess I could've made that more clear. Thought it was obvious.

Cubs win this 11-3.

CC pitches 6.1 IP giving up 6 H and 3 ER. Cubs break it wide open on the Brewers bullpen. Cubs bats are due for a 10+ run game, why not tonight?

So a guy at work asked me this and I was just not quite sure of the answer. If the Cubs lose a game in the series, does the magic number go up or stay the same?

The magic number can never go up. If the Cubs lose games the next 3 days, that just means the division magic number will stay the same. The playoff magic number would then still have a chance to go down if the Philly/Mets 2nd place team fell behind the Brewers.

I drove down the night of game 3, spent game 4 at a bar in Athens, then moved onto Atlanta for game 5.

It was obvious. I don't give a damn if you were going to the game or not. How could you ever possibly have mixed emotions about your favorite team winning a game, and a freaking playoff game even more. Especially when it is the Cubs. That seems like a pretty damn selfish thing of you. It is easy to look back now, and not think bad about it, but think if we would have lost that game 5. I just can't imagine rooting for a team all year, make the playoffs, and be torn over a playoff game, because you might get to see us win the series in person. Especially since I'm sure in Vegas we weren't favored to win game 5.

LOL if you don't understand why I might want to use my tickets after driving 10 hours to Atlanta and it being my first playoff game ever.

It's not like I said I was rooting against them. I was mixed, and I said I wanted them to win.

And Vegas odds don't really matter. It was Wood vs. Hampton, and I think Atlanta's starters were on short rest.

Are you implying that his mixed emotions could have had some sort of negative effect on the team?

For the person who asked about the magic number...

It is currently at 6.

It is ONLY the sum of Cubs Wins+Brewers Losses that cab affect the magic number at all.

If the Cubs win, it goes down by 2 (because it will be a Cubs win and a Brewers loss).

If the Brewers win, it is neither... therefore the magic # stays the same...

Can the Astros pass the Brewers before the end of the day Thursday? Meaning if we sweep and the Astros sweep, would we still clinch or do we need the Astros to lose at least one of the next 3 games?

If the Astros sweep and so do we, the magic number will be 1. But I don't see that happening.

EDIT: But that's interesting and I never thought about it... wow have the Brewers collapsed. I know the Astros are on a tear, but jeez.

So Dale Sveum is batting Mike Cameron and his .335 OBP leadoff tonight.

CF Mike Cameron

2B Ray Durham

LF Ryan Braun

1B Prince Fielder

SS JJ Hardy

RF Corey Hart

3B Craig Counsell

C Jason Kendall

P CC Sabathia

I get the feeling the next 12 games for the Brewers are going to be the weirdest in recent memory in terms of lineups and in-game changes, just because Sveum is trying to "shake things up."

I can see Cameron/Soriano parallels haha. Good thing Sveum is at least keeping the Bill Hall platoon alive.

Ouch. The friggin' trail of tears. I would not have wanted to be driving in that crowd leaving Wrigley that night.
