So last night I went to Manor to celebrate my girlfriend's 21st birthday with a few friends. At around 1 am, I go over to the bathroom and as I'm leaving I do a doubletake at a guy standing near the door. It's definitely Mike Fontenot but I was so starstruck and nervous I didn't know what to do (and I'm usually very outgoing).

Me: Do I know you from somewhere?

Fontenot: I'm not sure... I don't think so

M: Wait... are you... Fontenot?

F: Yeah, I'm Mike [extends his hand]... are you a Sox fan?

M: No! No! I'm a huge Cubs fan! I just wanted to make sure!

F: Ahh okay, so what's up?

M: I was there yesterday (Thurs), you guys are ridiculous and we're all pulling for you.

F: Thanks man... are you hammered right now?

M: Yeah kinda, we're on our second bottle

F: Yeah man, me too

M: Well, I'm gonna head out. I'll be there on 9/20, 9/21 and the last game of the season in Milwaukee.

F: Ok man I'll see you there

M: See you later. I love that sneaky power by the way.

F: [smiles] thanks

I later saw him at his table with some ridiculous girls. If he looks slow today, it's because he was at the club until after it closed, which was at 2. Either way, he was pretty down to earth and seemed like a nice guy.

Wow, that is really awesome. The only cool story I have is that I bumped fists with Octavio Dotel at a Sox game.

Do any Cubs players visit ND during the offseason? :D

Uh I bet Shark goes to a few  Plus, I'm pretty sure I saw Dempster at the ND-Syracuse game during Quinn's Jr. year

interesting fact: Dempster was a ND baseball commit before he signed with the Rangers.

I believe Ski thinks ND stands for North Dakota.

smart questions on Fontenot's part. He's a small guy, so he needs to prepare himself for an assault. If your'e a Sox fan, drunk, or both, he needs to check his exit strategy

Are there certain bars in Chicago where players (Cubs and visiting players) go to on a regular basis?

It varies by year. As new guys come in, they tend to frequent different bars. It's still not uncommon to see many members of the pitching staff at Stanley's after day games. (Maddux used to have his own little table in there. No one bothered him.) When I was at DePaul, it was considered a rarity to NOT see Kyle Farnsworth out at the bars every other night. He'd hit on anyone, didn't matter if they were there with their boyfriend/husband. And way back in the day you could always see Ron Coomer and Matt Stairs at Kelly's or the now closed Parkway on Fullerton. Most people didn't recognize them though. The college kids just assumed they were neighborhood drunks that liked to hang out at college bars.

Go out in Lincoln Park on a Saturday, and there's always the chance you'll run into A.J. Pierzynski. He gets booed every time he walks into a place, but he still keeps coming.

You do realize that if you asked 1000 Americans what they thought of when they heard the letters 'ND', maybe 3 would say North Dakota, and that's only because they live there.

North Dakota has the 48th highest population in the United States.

Not sure what this statistic is supposed to prove, but still.

i'm pretty sure you're dead wrong on that. ND is the postal abbreviation, and it's definitely the first thing i think of. a majority might say stupid notre dame, but it's hardly as lopsided as you say.

I didn't say the other 997 would say Notre Dame, just that virtually nobody would say North Dakota. Not that I know what else people would say, but I doubt that many people would say North Dakota.
