That's what this guy from ESPN says.

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/columns/story?columnist=law_keith&id=3555437

The Cubs' bullpen is deep, but injuries and the inconsistency of Carlos Marmol have created the need for more relief help. Jeff Samardzija has the name value, but Ceda has equivalent stuff, sitting at 94-96 mph and touching 99 at times, with a sharp slider that's becoming more consistent the more he throws it. Control remains his weakness, but Samardzija was recalled despite showing below-average command and control in Triple-A. One concern: Ceda has made 25 relief appearances in the minors this year, never on back-to-back days.

Marmol had one two-three week bad stretch in the middle of the season but otherwise has been probably the most dominant RP in baseball. Inconsistent means bad outing, good outing, bad outing, good outing. Marmol was consistently dominant for a couple months then consistently bad for a few weeks and then again consistently dominant. It just annoyed me when I read it but didn't surprise me.

Replacing Marmol with Ceda would be moronic. Ceda's had some impressive control problems throughout his career, despite the great stuff.

Bringing Ceda up to get him some major league experience and seasoning when rosters expand? Sure, why not. He could be used in blowouts effectively.

Control-problem pitchers have the most problems with consistency. This guy's solution is to call someone up who he himself says has control problems.

Unreal.

i don't think he's saying they should replace marmol with ceda... just that marmol's inconsistency has created the need for another relief pitcher.

which still makes no sense.

yeah that's what he said which is moronic because Marmol hasn't been inconsistent

Keith Law is always this crazy. I've stopped paying attention.

Although I do like the idea of calling up Ceda and seeing if he can't help us in the playoffs.

Wood

Marmol

Samardzija

Guzman

Ceda

That could, potentially, shut down teams in the playoffs like nobody's business.

Add Gaudin. He has 13 0 era outings in 18 tries since the trade and take out the one horrific outing (6 era) and his era in that span is around 2.

The first three plus will probably pitch 70% of our playoff relief innings. If we get one more bullpen guy to step up I could see us using a 4 man bullpen except in blowouts or lefty-lefty situations.

Do you really pay money for this "insider" information?

I got a 3 year subscription to the magazine on ebay for $4, so I get that inside scoop on the site for free. both are pretty worthless

Just curious...have there been any Cubs features in any of the issues this year?

I always like that kind of stuff, no matter how worthless the content usually is.

Dump Howry and put Ceda in his palce. Man , we would have even more heat in that pen

Gooz gets Howry's spot first.

Am I the only one who doesn't trust Guzman to be an effective reliever?

I honestly never open it. it either goes straight to the trash or my nephew takes it.

Do you trust him less than Howry?

I don't think anybody is investing anything into Guzman beyond hoping that he does prove to be an effective reliever over the next few weeks, because that would be a nice way to round out our bullpen and replace Howry. I don't think people necessarily believe he will, but I, for one, believe he can and hope he will...

For some reason I open it, leaf through it in 5 seconds and just put it aside. I don't even think they have any features on anybody, other than BMX guys.

Yeah, I don't trust that we have Marmol II waiting in the wings, but I trust him to be more effective than Howry, and that's all that matters.

Maybe the guy from ESPN should have watched Marmol for the last month and seen he has a sub 1 ERA. ESPN is so dumb, they never use the eye test, all they do is look at numbers and become "experts" on a subject.

Err, that's actually the reverse of what you said. If they had taken a look at the stats, they'd know better than when they use the "eye test".

I understand what you're saying...

Marmol has only had 1 bad stretch that lasted for 3 weeks... they probably looked at his June/July numbers and figured he had TWO bad months. Really, he only struggled in mid June and early July and has been fire before and after that. I have watched every game this year and know that, if you just look at his numbers, you wouldn't.
