Jason Marquis turned 30 on Thursday. Whether he also has turned a corner in his pitching career might be on display today but probably will take at least another month to determine. What he does know is that at this point in his career and his life, he wasn't willing to keep banging his head against a brick wall trying in vain to fix the same problem that plagued him each of the last two seasons. And he wasn't willing to do it alone.

Trying to break the cycle that has seen him fall off dramatically in the second halves of seasons, Marquis sought the help of a sports psychologist over the winter and kept the mental work going through occasional contact during the season.

''I'm not saying I've got it licked. I don't say I've got it figured out,'' he said. ''But I feel like I'm better than where I was the last two years. I don't think you'll ever have it figured out. You've always got to keep pushing and working to get better and stay on top of it.''

We'll see if he pitches more innings than Gaudin today.

I don't believe there's any doubt he'll pitch more innings, the question is how many runs will he have given up by then.

IMHO, Jasons playing for 2 things the rest of the way: that elusive playoff roster spot and trade value for the offseason, because I cant imagine a 2009 rotation with him in it. Nothing against him, but all the sogns are pointing to resigning Dempster, Hardens back, and we'll have Marshall, Hill, Shark, and Gooz competing for that 5th spot.

Honestly, I'll be absolutely floored if Guzman is even a candidate for the rotation next year - and pretty disappointed.

He's shown by now that he simply won't stay healthy as a starting pitcher. He'll almost certainly be in our bullpen next year, though.

I believe this organizatiion has forgotten about Guzman. I know I have.

Not reading the "Angel Guzman Rehab Thread"?

He's moved up to AAA and is likely to be called up in September. He'll pitch out of the bullpen when he's up.

Yea, that comment was sort of a head-scratcher.

I kept trying to think of another Guzman I might have forgotten from the Cubs organization.

"Best 5th Starter in Baseball" as you guys try to tell me.

Anyone ever heard of:

Clayton Kershaw

John Garland

Jered Weaver

Edwin Jackson

Glen Perkins

Jesse Litsch

???

Hope he has an open mind to be traded as well as shoved into the bullpen for being TERRIBLE and NOWHERE near a top 5th starter.

Jason Marquis numbers are right in line with everybody on that list except Kershaw and Jackson.
