Psh, Larry Suarez could eat Ryan Searle.

Hopefully Hernandez can work on his positive start last time out but limit his walks from last time out. He needs to be more consistent.

How has Veal done second half of the season? I haven't really been following him much this year.

His ERA isn't TERRIBLE, but it definitely isn't what I'd expect.

I wouldn't pay much attention to ERA when evaluating minor leaguers. You won't find much in the way of good defense down there, plus a lot of the minor league parks are effectively bandboxes.

Veal's been so-so. He'll make most Top 10 prospect lists for the Cubs, but he walks way, way, way too many people.

That's possible, I suppose. But man, I hope we've got ten guys more promising than Veal. If he's one of our top ten, that would speak more to the weakness of the farm than to the quality of Veal.

Hard to be very interested in a prospect with bad numbers across the board. His WHIP is awful (1.51), his HR's allowed are awful (15 HR in the anti-HR Southern League), his K's are mediocre and continue to decline, his ERA is high, and his FIP-ERA is worse. He'll turn 24 in a couple of weeks, so age is not in his favor. And there is nothing to indicate that he's really getting any better. He's had the same problems that he's always had (high walks, high HR), with no sign of anything getting better. (He does get more groundouts than he used to, but his one signature, the ability to K guys, has vanished.)

I think he's still got a shot to eventually blossom into a Felix-Heredia type lefty reliever, though.

Is it really a good thing to "blossom" into Felix Heredia?

Daytona's doubleheader in Vero was rained out today. They'll try to play two tomorrow and have another doubleheader in Daytona Beach next Wednesday.

Iowa down 2-0 in the 4th. Felix Pie has the only I-Cub hit, a single.

Tennessee scoreless in the 3rd. Veal: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

Dylan Johnston hit a solo HR for Peoria. Robert Hernandez: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 HR. Robert was perfect through 3.2 before giving up a HBP, RBI double, error by third baseman Luis Bautista, and an RBI double (2nd runner out at home). They're in a rain delay, down 2-1 with runners on in the bottom of the 4th.

Veal: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Struck out the side in the 4th.

Apparently Welington has been "stellar of late" behind the plate on defense.

Johnston's bat is really coming around this season since they moved him off short. It's still got a ways to go though if he's going to have enough bat to handle an outfield corner.

so is vitters the real deal? sure sounds like it.

anyway we could, in two years or so, move aramis to first and put vitters at third?

Right now, Aramis is a better defensive 3B than Vitters is. I imagine the picture will look a lot more clear in a couple years.

thanks rob!

been going through the different game threads in this section recently, and it seems like the good statistical analysis of nsbb really happens here, moreso than cubs discussions. good reads.
