Gah, how boring is the next month going to be? LOL

I'm all about a boring September 8-)

I'm all for going 5-1 in the next 6 games [3 vs PHI and 3 vs HOU] and be well on our way to sealing this deal!

Even if the Brewers and Cards went 5-1 in the same span, it would be Cubs 89-51 / MIL 82-57 (6.5) / StL 79-61 (10.0) but would reduce our numbers. Like, if Cubs went 11-11 in remaining 22 games [100-62], MIL would need to finish 19-4 to overtake us and StL 22-0 to keep us out of the playoffs.

So yeah, Cubs, go 5-1 in last 3 vs Philly and the 3 vs the Astros, and you'll clinch a playoff spot effectively! :clapping:

Analyzing playoff berth scenarios to death is so much more fun from this position.

I know, its dumb, and only asking for trouble (aka jinxes), but I can't help it.

After getting to 82-50/83-50 and games like tonight's (84-50!), its hard not to look ahead to playoff clinching possiblities.

Updated standing/playoffs numbers after tonight's AWESOME comeback win;

NL Central:

CUBS 84-50 --

MIL 77-56 6.5

StL 74-60 10.0

NL Wild Card

MIL 77-56 --

StL 74-60 3.5

[NYM 74-60 3.5]

PHI 73-61 4.5

28 games remaining for Cubs, Cards, [Mets], & Phils. 29 for Brewers.

- Cubs go 13-15 (97-65), MIL needs to finish 21-8 to win Central - StL 24-4 / PHI 25-3 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 14-14 (98-64), MIL needs 22-7 finish for Central - StL 25-3 / PHI 26-2 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 15-13 (99-63), MIL needs 23-6 finish for Central - StL 26-2 / PHI 27-1 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 16-12 (100-62), MIL needs 24-5 finish for Central - StL 27-1 / PHI 28-0 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 17-11 (101-61), MIL needs 25-4 finish for Central - StL 28-0 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 18-10 (102-60), MIL needs 26-3 finish for Central - Cubs win WC from here on, if unthinkable .897 Brewers winning % occurs from starting tomorrow through September

Cubs just need to finish .500 rest of the way, and they should be golden for winning the division and NL HFA.

Thanks for posting this info. I love seeing info like this, but it makes my brain hurt to try and put it together myself. I hope you continue to do it each day!

By my quick, depressing math, 100-win teams are 8-8 in playoff series since 2000.

This includes just 1-3 vs. teams with 89 wins or fewer.

Aren't all 3 losses to weak teams NL Central teams? (Cubs 2003 vs. Braves, Astros 2005 vs. Cards, Cards 2006 vs. Mets)

DeRosa made some good comments in his Lunch with a Legend interview regarding 2003. he said they all knew, when the Cubs clinched it, they were done because of Wood, Prior, and Zambrano. he said Chipper walked up to him and said "we're going home".

Is that what he said? I could be wrong, but I got the impression that he was saying that it was during game 5, when they saw the way Wood was pitching, that Chipper said that.

yeah, he said it was right toward the end of the season when they found out the Cubs clinched over Houston. they weren't afraid of Houston's pitching staff, but they knew that any one of the Cubs 3 could easily shut their offense down when all they had to counter with was a group that pitched to contact.

Mets only won 97 in 2006.

I counted 100 win teams at 7-11 in playoff series since 2000 and 1-2 against teams with 89 wins or fewer.

St. Louis (100) beat San Diego (82) in 2005.

St. Louis (100) lost to Houston (89) in 2005.

Atlanta (101) lost to the Cubs (88) in 2003.

I also wouldn't call that 2005 Astros team a weak one. They were 30 games over .500 after an awful 15-30 start when (I believe) Berkman was injured. In any case, sure it is a danger when you have pitching staffs like the 2003 Cubs and 2005 Astros. I guess you could consider the Dbacks that kind of threat this year. But the rest of the DBacks' roster is not as good as the aforementioned teams IMO.

Updated after games on 8/29;

Updated standing/playoffs numbers;

NL Central:

CUBS 85-50 --

MIL 78-56 6.5

StL 74-61 11.0

NL Wild Card

MIL 78-56 --

[NYM 75-60 3.5]

StL 74-61 4.5

PHI 73-62 5.5

27 games remaining for everyone but the Brewers, they have 28 left.

- Cubs go 11-16 (96-66), MIL needs 19-9 finish to win Central - StL 23-4 / PHI 24-3 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 12-15 (97-65), MIL needs 20-8 finish for Central - StL 24-3 / PHI 25-2 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 13-14 (98-64), MIL needs 21-7 finish for Central - StL 25-2 / PHI 26-1 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 14-13 (99-63), MIL needs 22-6 finish for Central - StL 26-1 / PHI 27-0 to keep Cubs home

- Cubs go 15-12 (100-62), MIL needs 23-5 finish for Central - StL 27-0

- Cubs go 16-11 (101-63), MIL needs 24-4 finish for Central - Cubs win WC from here on, even if unthinkable .897+ Brewers winning % occurs, starting today through rest of regular season

- Cubs go 17-10 (102-60), MIL needs 25-3 finish for the Central crown

- Cubs go 18-9 (103-59), MIL needs 26-2 finish for the Central crown

- Cubs go 19-8 (104-58), MIL needs 27-1 finish for the Central crown

- Cubs go 20-7 (105-57), MIL needs 28-0 finish for the Central crown

- Cubs go 21-6 (106-56), or better, and they can't be touched for the WC, Central crown, or NL HFA

Cubs finish .444 (12-15) rest of the way and they're well locked-in for the WC - a .556 finish (15-12) and they should be pretty well set up for winning the division and NL HFA.

Cubs just need to play .407 baseball [11-16] to un-anxiously secure the Wild Card, I'm thinking. It would force StL/NYM to go 23-4 and PHI 24-3 to beat us out.

has any team scored the most runs in a season AND allowed the least runs?

Seattle in 2001. Their run differential was +300.

Insane. I guess that's what happens when you win 116 games.

Geez, we'd better get to work.
