FYI, per the news, Marquis will be backing up Marshall in the bullpen (Jason's next start has been pushed back until Friday versus the Nationals). Also, lefties hit Sanchez hard so DWard starts at first base, Kosuke in RF, Fontenot at 2B, and Edmonds in center. The only question is who plays thirdbase.

Go Cubs!

Did the news say the last part or is that you? Probably no Gaudin (2 IP yesterday) or Wood (thrown in 3 straight games). I'm hoping Marshall goes 5. Samardzija goes 2. Cotts in the 8th. Marmol closes it out in the 9th.

I wonder how much is at stake for Marshall here. We saw Sean Gallagher get a start due to unforeseen circumstances, and Lou stayed with him in the rotation for a while. Lou has always wanted another LHP in the rotation. He has always known Marshall can do the job, it's just been about finding a place for him. The fact that Marquis is being skipped shows me that he doesn't fully trust Jason to handle the job.

Remember when the sky was falling that one time?

Yeah, me neither.

I'll look for Lee and Fukudome to break out of their slumps and Marshall to be solid, but not great. Cubs win again, 6-5.

If this is the case, I don't understand why we don't just start Marquis on short rest(with a limited pitch count) and have Marshall ready to back him up. Keeps guys in their familiar roles.

There's a good chance raw is right and maybe Lou is looking at Marshall as potentially starting.

That certainly explains the odd move tonight.

Problem is, theres nobody who really deserves to lose their spot in the rotation, even Marquis. And of course, something like this always prompts the weekly is something wrong with Harden panic outbreak.

Harden hasn't been very sharp in his last two starts since that 110 pitch outing in Milwaukee. 4 runs against Houston and 5 BBs and only 2 Ks in Atlanta.

Go Cubs!

Marquis threw 93 pitches 3 days ago, that's odd. I wish we could DFA Howry and bring up Lieber to back him up

Don't starters normally have a throw day in between starts? That's probably all this would be for him, and pushing him back to Friday is also allows for him to not get into the game tonight, take his throw day tomorrow, and still get rest. I don't think it sounds like too much of a stretch.

Also, I'm not big on Ward starting, but between the lefties crushing this guy and Lee's last three months, it seems like as good a time as any for a day off. Not bad moves by Lou.

Marshall Starting? awesome. Does this finally mean the days of marquis are done?

EDIT: nvm. Just read the post answering this.

Zambrano hasn't been very sharp in his last two outings either.

OMG OUR TWO ACES ARE LOSING IT SEASON OVER

Zambrano doesn't have Harden's injury history

I'm not saying Harden is hurt, but that 7 inning game in Milwaukee was his first extended start with the Cubs and since then he hasn't been as good. Could just be a coinidence.

Harden looked absolutely putrid, and still gave up 0 runs on 1 or 2 hits, so that should be a clue as to how great he is.

4 players have an OPS under .833 in the last 21 games! That's nuts. And one of those players (ward) has 13 ABs. Another one is Theriot, who could never OPS that high. It's no wonder the Cubs are 16-5 in their last 21. More impressive is the 21 game streak started 1-2. So, 15-3 over the last 18.

Also thought Derosa's line was interesting vs. Florida this year. His only hit a HR and he has walked 6 times against them.

So four lefties and five righties, and yet all the lefties bat in order.

I noticed this as well.

Shouldn't it be Marshall instead of Dempster?
