Is there any penalty for claiming players and not trading for them? I wonder what wouldn't stop a team from claiming every single player no matter what just so no one else can make trades.

Yeah, if the team that has the player says, "okay, you can have him," then the team that makes the claim gets the player, and his salary.

D'oh I forgot about that. I can't remember what it was, but that backfired for some team (it was probably the Mets) and they got stuck with a bad contract.

The Padres did that several years ago with Randy Myers to block the Dodgers from getting him. That ended up being a horrific decision by the Padres.

They were blocking the Braves. Boy the Braves had a charmed 90s.

The only discussion about Huff should involve his contract and who the Cubs would give up. Discussing Huff's defense brings up the question: What defensive position does Daryle Ward play?

I forget the specific teams involved, but I also remember somebody claiming Jose Canseco to block a trade and then getting stuck with him when they didn't even have a starting position for him.

Would love Huff for the stretch run. Would not like Huff for $8Mil next year. I don't know how tradeable he would be in the offseason.

Knowing how quickly MacPhail moves, we would be lucky to get him by January.

If its for the purpose of a salary dump, I could see him moving quickly. Of course, the Cubs and Orioles have a recent history of trades that dont really benefit anyone IE Sosa, Patterson, Traschle.

Pffft, does the name Mike Fotenot mean anything to you!

I believe it was the Yankees claiming Canseco off waivers from Tampa Bay to block him from going to..........Oakland.

Yes, that's what I was thinking of.

Huff's on pace for close to 50 doubles , over 30 homer runs, hitting 300, 350+ OBP and the guy hits from the left side of the plate while being serviceable at 3b,1B,RF. This would be quite a steal this late in the year for Hendry to nab him.

I don't think 8 mil is too much for that kind of production. The question is who would we have to give for him. The Orioles know our system better than anyone else, so who would tempt them at this point?

I guess that means that I would see him as an upgrade over Ward that could help us in the playoffs this year, as well as be a major cog next year.

Huff is having a career year. There are people wondering whether he will regress back to his norms next year. The real question is whether he can produce coming off the bench or in very limited duty. Also, the adjective "serviceable" may be exaggerating somewhat.

I wouldn't call it a career year considering it's right on par with the numbers he put up in 2003. Either way he's always been a left bat that hits for power and gets on base at a decent clip.

Personally, I don't see Hendry making a non-inside the organization move before August 31st, Basically what you see with the Cubs right now, will be the Cubs roster (for the most part) for the playoffs.

I don't want Huff on the Cubs next year, but this year is the year that it may finally happen and if we can go for it, let's finally do it. If we can just dump his salary in the offseason, let's try to win something already. I wish that he was a free agent after this season, but it's about time for the Cubs to make a push.

The way the offense has been lately, Im higher and higher on the idea of aquiring Huff. I doubt wed have to give up anyhing of value.

What's wrong with the offense lately? In their last nine games, they are averaging 6.67 runs a game.

I was thinking the same thing. The offense, and team, is fine. I wouldn't mind Huff, though. But it's an unnecessary luxury.
