Reports coming out of San Fransisco are that the Cubs are on the verge of acquiring OF Randy Winn from the Giants for OF/1B Daryle Ward and a minor league player to be named later.

Winn would be a significant upgrade over Ward:

Winn: .294 AVG, 5 HR, 46 RBI

Ward: .221 AVG, 2 HR, 9 RBI

Obviously it's not really fair to compare these numbers, but I did anyways.

My feeling is that this won't happen, even though I could see Hendry making a move like this with Fukudome struggling.

I would take that trade in a second. If he's ok with platooning with Fukudome in a second

Wow. Why would the Giants want Ward?

Ward has had a horrible year this year, but he had a really good one last year. I always thought Ward would come out of it but he never did.

color me down in a BIG way for this trade...ward...i love that big fat man...but jeez...he is something awful this year...and his injury fragile body isn't exactly anything to get all worked up over...

Winn and Micah

Were getting a reasonably good hitter and better outfielder, rather than a slow and not even good hitter anymore. It's a no brainer

I have no problem with Randy Winn as a bench bat this year. He's a somewhat versatile decent player, and the Cubs could use another one of those in the playoffs.

The problem is next year. He's due to make 8.25 million. I don't think the upgrade this year is worth the salary next year.

if the rumor is true, this is probably why the giants would do it. Take an expiring contract in ward and dump winn's contract

isn't Ward like 3mil though...I really wouldnt mind Winn as a platoon in right/ fourth outfielder

On the surface this seems like a good deal but let's dive into it a bit...

Winn is a switch hitter with plus speed (22 SB this year)

His splits:

.300 .363 .384 .747 vs. RHP in 08 .287 .346 .418 .764 career

.280 .333 .424 .757 vs. LHP in 08 .289 .342 .439 .782 career

So his OPS is higher vs. lefties, but he gets on base less and hits for a lower average.

So what is the potential role for Winn?

As a platoon partner for Fukudome?

Fukudome hits similar vs. RHP and LHP except for a much lower SLG%. If Winn hits vs. LHP instead of Fukudome, we will be getting a slightly higher average, a much lower OBP and a much higher SLG. I honestly have no idea how his defense, but I assume it would be somewhere around league average, so we'd be getting a downgrade in defense over Fuk.

As a pinch hitter/late inning replacement?

Everyone knows Ward struggled as a PH this year, but over his career he made his name PH. I would assume if we were trading Ward, we would want a competent PH.

Here are Winn's stats as a PH:

1-4 in 2008

.321 .410 .509 .919 career

So it looks like we would get someone who could come off the bench and hit.

I'm talking about next year...ward will be a free agent.

He would be a downgrade defensively, but you would have to think late in games they switch him out with Fukudome no matter what. I don't know I just really wouldnt mind a guy off the bench who could play RF.

Winn is owed roughly $10.5m from now through the end of next season. Ward is owed about

$300,000 through the end of this year only. Assuming the minor league PTBNL isn't anything special, this would be all about the Giants saving a very significant chunk of change.

Again....Source? I can't find anything on the internet.

To be honest, I just checked McCovey Chronicles, the SF news paper, did a Google search for 'randy winn cubs' went to BCB, and looked at the ESPN and MLB.com Giants message boards and didn't see anything on it.

Yeah I cant find anything at all about the Cubs

Sounds like a great deal for us, but Im having trouble understanding how a dead in the water team like the Giants would want Ward whose a FA next year, unless we're throwing in a decent prospect, and they think they can turn around and send Ward to a contender for another prospect.

Usually when theres the slightest inkling of a trade, no matter how minor, MLBtraderumors has something on it, and rotoworld isnt too far behind, but neither of them have anything on it.

This looks fine but it depends on the minor leaguer. If the Giants are looking to just get out of a contract than it probably will be a better deal for the Cubs but if the money is not the main factor than this might cost a pretty good minor leaguer that could have an impact in September or the next couple of years.

they'd do it to get out of randy winn's contract for next year. it's not about acquiring anything good, it's about shedding payroll.

anyways, if i'm the cubs i'd just dfa ward and call up hoffpauir. that solves our problem.

I can't see a more than average minor league player for Randy Winn

Manager Bruce Bochy sure likes his right fielder.

"I don't know anybody who wouldn't want a Randy Winn," Bochy said Tuesday after he was asked if he wanted to see Winn in right field next season. Some Giants fans, enamored with Triple-A right fielder Nate Schierholtz, surely disagree. Winn has one year left on his contract. As long as he is patrolling right field at China Basin, Schierholtz appears to be blocked.

These things often take care of themselves. Winn could be packaged in a deal for a middle-order hitter this winter, and who knows? Schierholtz could be moved in such a deal. General manager Brian Sabean has said multiple times he wants Winn here to help the Giants advance their turnaround. Bochy agreed.

"It's hard to find a player like Randy, who's got the whole game," Bochy said. "His speed, he's a switch-hitter, his defense. A lot of clubs would love to have Randy on their team."

It's not hard to construe this as playing up a player's trade value a bit. But there's nothing indicating a move is likely.
