Yea Sosa shouldn't be on there I hate to say it...

Why not?

Ranks second in career SLG% as a Cub, 4th in runs created, 3rd in adjusted batting runs, 3rd in batting wins, 3rd in extra base hits.

Sosa is one of only six players with 600 career homeruns. Sosa is a no doubter as one of the top three Cubs of all-time, despite your emotional feelings for the player.

sosa was an awesome player. He just fell out of my good graces. Production wise, he's head and shoulders above everyone.

Listing a bunch of statistics that put Sosa 3rd or 4th don't make a compelling argument for him being a no doubter for the top 3 Cubs of all time. Considering positional scarcity, I'd put him 4th behind Williams, Banks, and Santo, not to mention deadball guys like Anson and Chance, or pitchers like Jenkins, Smith and Brown.

Well that's not really true. Banks is pretty clearly the best of the modern Cubs imho.

I was more upset that Jody Davis didn't make the list.

Jesus, put Jim Edmonds on that list --- great catch!

he's not a no-doubter, and of course his offensive statistics are better than guys like billy williams, ron santo or cap anson - those guys played when pitching was more dominant than hitting, while sosa played in one of the most extreme offensive periods in history.

and he was an elite hitter in a hitting dominant era, so why hold that against him?

i'm not holding it against him, but i am weighing the relative significance of those numbers. santo was an elite hitter in a pitching-dominant era, and was a better defensive player than sosa, and played a position where less offense is produced than RF.

And Santo did it with Diabetes back when they didn't really know how to treat it at all.

I don't think anyone is suggesting replacing Santo with Sosa

No, I couldn't imagine how bad it would be to listen to Sammy's hard accent for 9 innings.

Is the franchise player thing on ESPN supposed to be the 3 best ever from a certain team, or the 3 most identifiable players from a certain team?

If it's identifiable players, I don't see how Sammy can't be #1 or #2 in that list.

It seems to be a "When you think Cubs, who are the first three players that come to mind?" kind of list.

So yeah, Banks, Sosa, Williams, Sandberg make sense. Santo if it were a Cub fan only poll.

I would take 8 innings of Sosa doing his "I suddenly picked up a heavy accent" schtick in a heartbeat over Santo.

Just sub in Santo whenever it looks like something really exciting might happen.

It's supposed to be the greatest players for each franchise.
