She doesn't care, as long as they're not mean to their employees or something.

Just make sure the owner knows where he can and can't go in the stadium that he owns!

An old New York Times article about Cuban and his "cutting edge" winval statistical models from from 2003.

I don't see he and Hendry seeing eye to eye on much.

Dare I say ... could Cuban and his pocketbook and a common philosophy entice Beane to join in as GM/President of Baseball Operations?

Beane & Hendry are tight and it would be hard to imagine Beane accepting the job that got Jimmy fired unfairly. More likely, Hendry would keep his gig and Billy B would assume the old MacPhail president role. Long shot, for sure.

Come on guys...please lay off Red here. She said she didn't like owners like Cuban and she's allowed to have her own opinion.

Aren't we allowed to criticise and challenge her opinions, especially when they're completely ridiculous?

No one has violated board rules here.

It's a fine line between "criticizing and challenging opinions" and "mocking opinions". While neither are violating rules, nobody should complain about the reactions they get when they do it.

Cuse was trying to defuse a bomb before it explodes, instead of trying to clean up the mess afterwards.

The poster randomly compared Cuban to Loria without defending or explaining why, and has provided absolutely zero reasoning behind the dislike of Cuban.

But more importantly, why shouldn't people complain about the reactions they get when they criticize and challenge opinions?

It's not the complaining but the assuming what Red would say stuff. Go ahead and argue what she wrote fine, but....don't say "she doesn't care" "She'll say this" or the like. IMO, she should be able to answer a question for herself and not have a poster make an answer for her.

She is able to. She just refuses to. She has invoked Loria's name on multiple occasions in the Cuban discussion, and, to my knowledge, has never even attempted to explain the comparison. Any time she is ever asked to explain, she talks about walking on egg shells, not getting respect, being unfairly criticized, or just being an insider who can't divulge anymore information. She expects everybody to accept what she has to say as gospel, but is unwilling to explain or defend her positions.

The question remains, how are Cuban and Loria the same?

Again...I have no problem with posters asking that, none at all. It's the remarks about her or what she'd say. If she doesn't answer and does a post and run grill her on that or maybe, just possibly she isn't tied to her computer all day and can give constant feedback. I agree the Loria/Cuban tie in thing made no sense and she should explain that once she's back on.

she hasn't made one worthwhile post here, ever. people just want her to post again so they can rubberneck.

They just mentioned on the NBC local news that Cuban is trying to pick up someone local for his ownership group to get past the "local ties" concerns.

Do you guys realize how glorious it would be to have Cuban as Cubs owner? The payroll would skyrocket and we'd have a hands on owner...
Posted
The payroll doesn't exactly have much room to go up. I don't see how it could "skyrocket." I'm guessing we'd see a bump of some sort, though, at least if he attempts to make a splash initially.

I saw an interview 4 or 5 years ago with Cuban where he said if the NBA allowed it he would lose money sign the best team and win a championship. With baseball having no salary cap I think Cuban will raise it by one star player (15 mil or so) right away and if we don't win in one or two years raise it some more. In the interview he talked about being a billionaire and not needing to make money anymore so he will definately raise it.

Posted
I didn't say he wouldn't raise it. The point is we are already an extremely high payroll team and are guaranteed to be higher next year. It's not like he's taking over the Pirates. It's a little hard for this team's payroll to skyrocket.

The Yankees got us almost doubled it can still skyrocket.

The luxury tax threshold in 2009 is 162M. The 2008 Cubs payroll is 118M...yeah, theres still plenty of room to skyrocket without even invoking the luxury tax.

i can really identify with cuban. after all, i was once the owner of something, too.

Given your political ideology I find that about as hard to believe as a similarity between Cuban and Loria. :D

What’s the UFL? Good question. Apparently, it stands for United Football League, a startup league with six planned franchises for the 2009 season. Both Mark Cuban and the New York Wilpons will own teams, and - presuming the league gets off the ground - Peter King from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED tells us today that the league’s first signing will be one Mike Vick

Ugh I don't think associating one's self with Mike Vick and fledgling football leagues is going to help you buy a MLB team.

You just like Cuban because you think he's associated with Fidel!
