Jason Marquis ERA+: 96

Sean Marshall's ERA+: 109

You know better than to use 32-inning stats.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. People seem completely incapable of intellectual honesty with regards to Jason Marquis.

Ok then...show me how Marquis is a better option than Marshall.

I said they were roughly equal.

Marshall's career ERA+ is almost identical to Marquis' ERA+ for this season and career (and Marquis' FIP clearly indicates that the ERA has reflected his actual pitching this season).

PECOTA found no reason to project much improvement into Marshall this season, and nothing he's done this year indicates he's made any major step forward (though granted, he hasn't had much chance to show anything at all).

So I see no reason not to consider Marshall and Marquis to be roughly equal pitchers.

God dammit

What did the former rookie of the year candidate do?

Sounded like a lazy fly out to center to me.

Two walks in the inning, bases loaded, and what does Soto do?

Swing at the first two pitches like a moron.

I love that this guy has walked two this inning and then Soto swings at everything. :banghead:

A belt-high mistake slider is not a bad pitch to swing at. He just missed it.

Those don't mean much since one is a starter and the other is a reliever. Marshall is used mostly when he has the matchup advantage, so you'd expect his ERA+ to be fairly good.

Gotta love all the people hating on Soto...unreal.

When people do stupid crap, be it my favorite player or not, it's still stupid crap.

It's one thing if you do the right thing and get a bad result. I'm OK with that.

Swinging at the first pitch away (by a pull hitter, mind you) after the pitcher has walked two guys with two outs and the bases are loaded isn't what I would call smart.

There are times to swing at a first pitch. That wasn't one of them.

And so you see no reason that we should be unhappy that Marquis with his $6.75 million salary is not performing better than Marshall and his salary? (I couldn't find Marshall's salary, but lets agree it's significantly lower.)

Again, patience is one thing. You go up to the plate looking for a specific pitch in a specific location. Soto got a meatball rolling slider that was belt-high down the middle, he just missed it that time.

I was hating on his aprroach that inning, not him.

I dont hate on him, its just that coming through in the clutch isnt really his thing.

I did look for a starter/reliever split on the ERA+, but B-R didn't have one.

I'm pretty sure he thought he had a good pitch to hit, it just didn't work out for him.

Unhappy with Hendry for giving him the contract? Sure. But Marquis is exactly who he's always been, it's not like he was a great pitcher who got worse with his contract.

And 90% of the comments (and not just in the GDT) aren't saying Marquis is an overpaid pitcher. They are saying he's a horrible pitcher, which he's not.

Ha, by that logic then you can't even get mad at CPatt. He thinks he is getting good pitches to hit.

Except this time it was a good pitch to hit. Sometimes, good players miss bad pitches.
