McGehee was not quite the right handed hitter off the bench I've been pining for. It's not even like he's had a great year and they're rewarding him for it. Dubois or Kroeger were the clear contender for that honor. Failing that, Matt Craig again did nothing but hit this year.

I think McGehee is seriously getting the call so he can be a 4th catcher, and that's just lunacy.

Kroeger is a lefty.

Matt Craig was placed on the DL.

Pie is staying in Iowa for the playoffs. They aren't going to strip the Iowa team just to put a player on the bench.

I was thinkig the same thing. If we called up everyone, then that would kind of screw over Listach. If we realy needed all of those guys that would be one thing, but we really dont.

Are they allowed to send some Tennessee guys to the Iowa roster like Jake Fox or Tyler Colvin to take their spots at Iowa?

I think Jake Fox is a shoe-in to replace Hoffpauir's bat at Iowa. Maybe Doug Deeds could replace McGehee's bat.

They always replaced the disabled Scales with Tennessee's Nate Spears and the disabled Matt Craig with Nate Samson.

I'm just surprised Fuld or Pie wasn't called up for defense and pinch running.

I know. He's still a better option than McGehee vs. lefties.

DLee hits Oswalt well so he'll be in the lineup tommorrow. Maybe Hoff gets the start in RIght field? If we had won today I would want Lieber starting tommorrow pushing everyone else back another day , nows the time to do it. Zambrano's "dead arm phase" can't linger long we need everything he and Harden have for OCT. Blanco hitting well of late and Hill hitting in Iowa give Lou some decent options to give Soto a much needed breather.

How do you not call up a pinch runner??

That's what Cedeno becomes with McGehee(RH PH) and Hill(Blanco becomes a RH PH) getting called up.

You think today was a sign that Lou's comfortable with DeRosa as the backup SS?

No different than the dozens of times that Cedeno has pinch hit before the 9th inning and not remained in the game.

I second that and I also throw Bobby Scales into that mix of guys having better years than McGehee...plus he can play many different positions and would be a good pinch runner if needed.

It's ashame that they wont give Craig a shot anywhere above AA and I believe he is a free agent at the end of the year along with Kroeger and Dubois (although I would be less upset if we lost those guys). It's not like McGehee is going anywhere next year in the Rule V draft, so why didn't we bring up Craig and keep him around for another few years instead of letting him go someplace else and pull a Luis Montanez on us again?

Bobby Scales is hurt and likely will miss the rest of the season.

I was really hoping to see Pie called up. He'd be ideal as a pinch runner in late innings. It would also be great for him to be in this environment as we push closer and closer to the playoffs.

McGehee? That seems odd.

Indeed - the others were fairly obvious choices.

Didn't McGehee leave a good impression with Lou during ST? Maybe Lou just has a good memory (which would also explain the absense of Pie, Fuld et al.)

I think he has a role for him that would work for the team, especially with the lack of a righty power guy off the bench.

Me too. I'm very disappointed to not see Pie up. Can he be called up later this month?

Yes he can. Major league teams frequently wait until the end of the minor league season (including playoffs) for some of their call-ups. I'd be shocked if he isn't up after Iowa's season ends.

I wouldn't call Megehee a power threat.

Looks like Wellington Castillos been added to Iowas roster to take Koyie Hills place. Strange that Jake Fox didnt get the call. I wonder if more are to come. Jose Ceda would be a good choice to replace wuertz in their pen.
Not strange at all. Hill = catcher; Castillo = catcher; Fox = not catcher.

Jake Fox isn't a catcher anymore. I have no clue why he was ever listed as a catcher on the cubs site to begin with. He hasn't been a regular catcher since '06.

Scott McClain got called up by the Giants today. Not Cubs related at all, but I didnt think it needed its own thread, but the guy seems to get a call up every other year, and he has to be 40 by now.
If by "40" you mean 36 you'd be right.

Die Hard has actually only played in the majors three previous seasons: 1998 with the (then) Devil Rays, 2005 with the Cubs, and last year with the Giants. His total major league action before this year is 45 at-bats in 30 games.

Casey McGehee gets the call up. Nice to see the Cubs reward a system guy. This move is more about morale amongst the rest of the non prospects than anything else. Look for him to make his only start at 3rd the day after the Cubs clinch.

It was also good to see Wuertz actually get used in a close game. Maybe he got a haircut and Piniella doesn't know its him.
