in case anyone cares, this is basically THE talk in dayton. this is the most exciting thing to happen to this town since the wright brothers were tinkering around in the local bike shop.

Off topic to the subject at hand, but the Wright brothers first took flight at Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Not sure why Dayton, OH keeps trying to steal our thunder... :-k

congrats north carolina for being windier than dayton. that's all north carolina provided.

all the hard work was done in dayton.

So it is true that they are bitter in OH. Sorry, in NC we got wind, water, hills, mountains, beach, plains, valleys, etc. You see we have whatever it is that you're looking for. I just think it's funny that OH tries to take credit for the first flight, that's all. Our soil, our credit. Carry on.

Ohio does the work, North Carolina gets the glory. Sounds fair to me. :D

Don't worry Mod, I'll do the grunt work

I'm just getting a rise out of you too. Half credit is fine by me, I just like to egg people on (cordially). To be honest, ppl around here don't talk about it that much. The only reason I know the Wright bros are from OH is from Wright St. U and OH license plates.

Bloomington Pantagraph"]Castillo was arraigned by video from the Montgomery County jail on Friday and ordered held on bond. Dayton Municipal Judge Carl Henderson also required Castillo, who is from the Dominican Republic, to give up his passport.

“This charge is a result of outlandish and inexcusable conduct by a professional baseball player,” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mathias Heck Jr. said in a statement.

If convicted, Castillo would face up to eight years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

Dressed in jail blues, he stood with his arms folded behind his back and showed little emotion. He was flanked by his attorney and an interpreter. Castillo said he has been in the United States for a month and has been living with teammates in Peoria.

Defense attorney Kevin Braig had asked Castillo’s release.

“He is employed gainfully by the Peoria Chiefs,” Braig told the judge. “He has no history of prior offenses. I’ve been in contact with the club. This matter is being taken serious.”

I would guess that Castillo is going to get convicted. What I'm not sure about, legally, is whether he just gets deported or if he goes to jail then gets deported.

Additionally, after seeing Carmello Martinez's reaction to things, I wonder how much time he'll have left in the organization. He was a last-minute replacement of Julio Garcia when Julio left for the Cincinatti organization. I'm not sure if Martinez had previously been doing other things for the Cubs, but if he's a first year coach / employee of the organization, he wouldn't be getting a great performance review from me. Yikes.

I definitely don't envy George Spelius, Rocky Vonachen, or Oneri right now.

RON: God that really got out of hand fast. I mean that really escalated quickly. Brick did you stab a man with a trident? BRICK: Yeah, there were horses and a man on fire and I killed a guy with a trident.

This is his first year as Latin America Field Coordinator, but his 11th year in the organization. He was with Mesa the past 10 years, including stints as Manager (1999--2003, 2006). I think he may have been hitting coach during the other years.

An update on Julio from AP:

MiLB.com"]A Minor League pitcher accused of throwing a ball that hit a fan in the forehead was indicted Wednesday on two counts of felonious assault.

Julio Castillo, 21, who was pitching for the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League, is accused of throwing into the stands during a July 24 game at Dayton that featured a 10-minute, benches-clearing brawl. The fan was treated for a concussion at a hospital and released.

...

"There is no excuse for this type of behavior, whether it's in a ballpark or a back alley," Heck said. "Fans should not be subjected to violence because a player is unable to control his temper."

Defense attorney Dennis Lieberman said Castillo, who is from the Dominican Republic, will plead not guilty. Lieberman said the charges aren't justified by the circumstances and his client has a good defense.

"In my research, I have found this to be an unprecedented indictment in American baseball," Lieberman said. "These are very serious charges that could destroy this kid's chance of ever playing baseball in the United States again."

If convicted on both counts, Castillo could face up to 16 years in prison. He is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 13.
