SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Rockies have discussed Matt Holliday with the Mets, Angels and others, in addition to the Phillies.

It's the talks with Philadelphia that seemed to progress the most, but those are dead now. Heyman says the Rockies asked the Mets for Carlos Beltran in a Holliday deal, apparently with Willy Taveras and top Mets prospect Fernando Martinez also changing hands. We doubt the conversation went anywhere after that. Dan O'Dowd reportedly requested either Joe Saunders or Ervin Santana, plus Howie Kendrick and Nick Adenhart from the Angels. Arte Moreno's first born apparently was off the table.

I'd love for the Cubs to get involved, but I don't see us having the prospects to get it done.

If I'm the Rockies' GM, I'm probably focusing on getting FMart. Although I might approach the Rays first (selling Holliday as RF) and try to get as much of their good, young minor league talent as possible.

He might be too expensive for the Rays.

The Angels aren't really that interested from what I've read/heard.

True, he would definitely be a rental. I don;t think I'd advocate the Rays giving up their young talent, but as a Rockie's GM I would try.

I really hope the Phillies don't get him.

Rollins, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Holliday.

Yikes.

You act as if the Phillies have enough to even get the Rockies to the table, much less acquire Holliday. The Phillies just traded their 2/4th best prospects for an innings eater, and this while their system was't exactly overflowing with premium talent. So, you can rest easy, Holliday won't be going to Philadelphia.

Did you miss the line in the original post that said the Phillies talks made the most progress? Yes, it later went on to say that those talks had died, but from the article, it is clear that the Phillies had more than enough to get the Rockies "to the table."

And then the deal died because the Phillies couldn't give the Rockies what they wanted. The end. Unless they involve other teams, which is very unlikely given how little they have to offer, Holliday isn't going to the Phillies.

I was only speaking in hypotheticals. You know, like, "How good would the Cubs be with Josh Hamilton?"

my bad. didn't realize Helton is having an off year.

Not at off year at 36. It's called the twilight.

Helton is 34, not 36. Still in his twilight, perhaps, but he is not 36.

I just randomly picked a number. Either way, Helton is not that good this year because he has become a not that good player because of his age.

I heard one rumor that had Holliday and Fuentes going to Philly for Shane Victorino (what the hell?), Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, and J.A. Happ.

Doesn't make much sense to me...it would completely clear out what's left of Philly's farm system, but it doesn't seem like enough for 1.5 years of Holliday and a solid reliever like Fuentes. Victorino being included makes me believe that it's a bogus rumor (what the hell would the Rockies do with Podsednik, Taveras, Spilborghs and Victorino?? That's a ton of crappy speedy outfielders), and it doesn't seem like the kind of move Dan O'Dowd would make if he believes the team will contend again next year once everyone's healthy.

O'Dowd's probably better off waiting until the offseason and trying to sucker a team into a Miguel Cabrera-type deal during the Winter Meetings or something.

I think the Cubs could probably offer to trade their entire farm system and it wouldn't be enough for Holliday. I just hope he doesn't end up on the Cards or the Brewers. I'd prefer he end up in Philadelphia. Hell, if I were Hendry, I'd try to set up a triangle trade to get Fuentes and send Holliday to the AL.
