Just a bump because I heard Lawrence Holmes on the Score during his show with Dan Hampton mention getting texts from sources about the sale being complete. Alluded to Stone possibly addressing about it at 2PM on B&B. Anyone else hear this? Personally, I doubt anything actually happened because A) no one else has picked it up yet and B) that seems awfully fast for a decision to be made. Anyone tell me I'm at least not crazy for hearing that?

I was imagining the sale taking longer. But then again, if they find their guy they find their guy I guess.

Will be interesting to follow this story.

The rumor is that it's the Ricketts guy. This was already posted in the thread about the blog posting hinting that Cuban was out.

Supposedly, Stone wanted to be part of an ownership group and he signed the TV deal with the Sox when he found out he wouldn't be.

I guess we'll see.

He wanted to be apart of Ricketts group?

So was he forced out of a stake or Ricketts group wasn't selected?

As far as I know he just wanted to be part of a group. I have no idea what group. The theory (suggested in the other thread) was that since Stone won't get to do that, he signed the extension.

Thanks.

The sale of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, along with storied Wrigley Field and a stake in SportsNet Chicago, a cable TV operation, could pass a milestone by the end of this month or early in October. Final bids for the Cubs and the other assets will be due by then, according to press reports, with five bidding groups still in the running.

The next step in the sale of the Cubs assets, according to a Reuters report, will be a series of presentations by Tribune Co. management over the next few weeks, after which final bids will be presented.

That certainly doesn't make it seem like any deal is imminent. I don't see any reason for the Cubs to abandon their process and select a winner while the season is going on.

Yeah...that doesn't make it sound at all like something was going to be finalized within 24 hours.

It wouldn't be the first time old news was regurgitated and passed off as an "update" in this whole process.

True, but this doesnt seem to be old news and the presentations could have already took place. The article says the final bidding will take place in October after thep presentations, so seems as if presentations are supposed to start about now.

Plus I wouldnt see Zell just stopping everything and accepting a bid now without the presentations and final bidding. You would think the final bidding will have higher bids and increase the chance for the price to increase.

Market Crash could help Cuban hurt Ricketts in Cubs sale...

http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/ny-spken215851166sep21,0,1440665.column

Certainly the Ricketts family, which seems to be the front-runner by a good margin at this point, their fortune is in private equity investments. One would think that they have been hit significantly by this, and that might influence their wherewithal.

The sexier suitor - to the public, at least - has been Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, whose wealth doesn't revolve around such traditional industries. While one person with knowledge of Bud Selig's thinking said that the baseball commissioner wasn't opposed to bringing Cuban into the owners' club, Cuban does have an important adversary in White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who, as owner of the Chicago Bulls, already conducts business with Cuban.

Hopefully Cuban gets this..

Any idea how Ricketts would be as an owner? I know alot of people said Canning wouldnt spend but I have no idea about Ricketts. Anybody have any info on this guy?

Cubs Sale Discussion, Cuban in town..

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/telander/1186551,CST-SPT-rick26.article

Greta Van Susteren asked him on Fox News on Wednesday if the current national financial mess didn't make this a bad time to buy the Cubs.

''It's always a good time to buy a good baseball team,'' Cuban said with his trademark sly grin.

Did I miss a metaphor somewhere, or did the Sun-Times use "sail" when they should have used "sale" in the headline?

Wait so can someone give a quick recap of where we are now? I haven't been following the sale very much during the last month of the season... any quick recap instead of having to read 100 posts?
