DENVER - Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban remains as interested as ever in buying the Cubs, dismissing a report that Major League Baseball might not want him as an owner.

I think it was De Luca that had that story yesterday, and lately he seems wrong on everything. He wrote an article saying how his sources said we weren't going after Peavy, and then that same night writes an article saying his sources are saying we are in heavy pursuit of him (after all of the other articles).

The ticker bar on ESPN just said that MLB WILL allow Cuban to buy the Cubs. Did anyone else see this?

I fully expect this. The previous report makes zero sense without having having a single fact in it.

Had this back in September.

Don't dislocate your shoulder patting yourself on the back. ;)

Some of you misinterperate things. I was mostly pointing out that De Lucca is not exactly on top of things, and yeah when you share unpopular news it isn't well recieved. I want Cuban as an owner more than anyone. It's just that when someone close to the situation tellls you it aint gonna happen like they tell you there is no Santa you understand or you deny. The ESPN and Cuban talk is just spin-control. MLB will look very bad if this is proven. On another point though, other than Bruce Miles, these writers who cover baseball in this town don't know Howry! Not saying I do, but holy Howry they make this stuff up it seems half the time. Hendry told me that the only reporter he trusts with anything is Bruce Levine. Mostly because Levine has info from all of the GM's and they share. Levine has been way out in front on the Peavy stuff as the writers were poo-pooing it. Now they jump on the bandwaggon.

So, in short, there's still absolutely nothing that indicates this is anything besides an MLB employee talking out of his or her ass or giving their opinion.

Well, De Lucca's source sounds more like a Selig guy, however some of the info that got out is from people involved in the actual deal. Think prospective buyers, Trib suits. I was given way more than an opinion, it was stated as take it to the bank, how could you even think he has a chance, don't be so niave fact. The only people who actually think that Cuban has a chance are fans according to these people.

It still sounds like someone voicing their opinion. MLB and the owners are obviously taking a hard look at the financial situation of the sport coming up given the economy, and to think they would so readily dismiss a move that would ultimately bring more money to the game and increase the value of the teams doesn't just not make any sense...it's actually anti-logic. If the quote is legit and has something to it, this sport is in trouble.

The fact that Zell is going to hold on to part of the club also seems to rule out Cuban. I think the Canning group would make sense as well as Ricketts because of their relationships with Chicago biz men. Zell already has ties to these guys.

Canning was at my school a few weeks, and it didn't sound he was involved in the process and, either way, wasn't as interested anymore.

The Ricketts family is getting shredded in this market. TD Ameritrade's been getting hammered over the past month and a half. I'm having trouble seeing them getting the money they need to make this deal happen.

DENVER (AP)—Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban remains as interested as ever in buying the Chicago Cubs, dismissing a report that Major League Baseball might not want him as an owner.

According to a Chicago Sun-Times report that cited a baseball source, there was “zero chance” of Cuban taking over the

Cubs.

The Sun-Times source said the Internet billionaire would meet with resistance in trying to get approval from Major League Baseball.

Cuban wouldn’t comment on the report before the Mavericks played Denver on Friday night.

“There’s no reason to comment on anonymous comments from unsolicited sources. I mean it’s ridiculous,” Cuban said.

Cuban is in the running to purchase the team from the Tribune Co. after reportedly bidding more than $1 billion.

Others believed to be interested are a group headed by John Canning, chairman of private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners LLC; and the family of online brokerage Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts.

“Nothing’s changed,” Cuban said. “I mean it’s a great opportunity.”

Cuban's interest won't influence the owners to allow him on. The Cubs will be a prosperous organization and will benefit MLB no matter who gets in.

I think the second half of the sentence was the important part. We already know he's interested.

Global financial crisis or not, baseball's old guard plans to stand firm against letting Cuban into the club. ''There's no way Bud and the owners are going to let that happen,'' a Major League Baseball source said this week. ''Zero chance.''

Am I the only one who thinks this "Major League Baseball source" is no other then Jerry Reinsdorf or somebody in Reinsdorf camp? Dorf has the most to lose if Cuban is allow to become owner of the Cubs. Not only would he have to deal with Cuban in NBA related matters, butalso MLB related matters. Regardless of what they say publicly you know Reinsdorf doesn't want Cuban anywhere near baseball much less Chicago.

Maybe it's the paranoia in me, but it definately would fit with Reinsdorf train of thought.

You guys weren't paying attention, Dallas just said that MLB was discussing the possibility of not letting Cuban own a team, he never said it was going to happen.

Actually Ryan, what people have said is that Cuban would have a real good shot at another club (Pittsburgh) if he doesn't act up over the Cubs thing. It's just that he won't get the Cubs.

1. They want local peeps, in part that is why Cuban contacted Jim Anixter to join his group.

2. Reinsdorf (I even heard that Cuban might offer him some$ under the table to appease?)

3. Selig doesnt want a Steinbrenner Jr. with a huge market

I'm thinking that Cuban is out with all the news that the ratbastard Zell is going to sell the Cubs in smaller chunks to avoid taxes and restructure the deal so as to make it more affordable. Ricketts probably can no longer afford the price.

Now they're saying that Zell may only sell half of the Cubs. I don't understand how he can do this, as he still owns part of the WSox. MLB should be forcing him to sell the whole team since their rules don't allow for anyone to have stakes in more than one team. If he can't sell the team for what he wants because of the economy, he should have thought of that before buying the trib.

On the flip side, this should go as evidence that MLB doesn't want Cuban to own the team. I haven't read anything that suggests he's no longer willing to pay the 1B that they're looking for that he already bid earlier. If anything, it should be shaping up so that Cuban is the last man standing. The fact that he's looking to drop the sale down to a 50% share sounds like they're trying to manipulate the situation so that Canning or Ricketts can buy half of the team now, and then buy up the other half down the road when the economy rebounds and they can get the financing that they need.

This whole situation reeks of BS to me.

Before the Zell keeping half story came out, Ricketts was the last one standing according to someone in Canning's group.

I can't believe they're doing anything than trying to fix the process to get the buyer they want. I'd like to see Cuban sue to get compensated for lost time and money for all of the effort that went into valuating and bidding on the team.

You make some good points. It all sounds like Canning's group is going to get back in the door.
