it's amazing that only 20 years ago pitchers were throwing complete games left and right. hard to believe that the world of pitching has changed that much in two decades. we complained about the abuse put on Wood and Prior's arms at young ages, but Dwight Gooden pitched 10 innings in a playoff game (at age 21) and no one blinked

According to the box score, Gooden only threw 73 pitches in the 10 innings. That's probably why nobody complained. Not saying this disproves your point, just that in that specific case it's not a big deal.

the opposing pitcher threw 9 innings

and Gooden threw 250 innings with 12 CG's at age 21

It's more about pitches/inning than innings pitched.

ok, then why do pitchers today have more pitches/inning than they did 20 years ago? better hitters? worse control? tighter strike zone?

How in the world do you throw only 73 pitches in 10 innings? The Astros hitters would have had to have swung at the first or second pitch just about every time up.

They had 9 hits, 4 K's and 2 walks, so the minimum number of pitches based on the one double play they show in the box score would be 54. I find it hard to believe that there were only 19 other pitches in 10 innings that did not result in an out or a hit. What am I missing? It just doesn't seem possible.

Especially considering Gooden was extremely good at missing bats with his pitches. Jon Lieber, I could believe. Not Gooden.

MLB Network going to broadcast the Caribbean Series. Pretty cool.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090113&content_id=3742376&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

MLB Network is heading to Mexicali, Mexico, to broadcast the annual Caribbean World Series from Feb. 2-7.

The 12-game tournament will mark the first time the fledgling Network will broadcast live games. Previously, it had scheduled a 16-game slate of World Baseball Classic games when that tournament is played from March 5-23.

In addition to the live events, the Network will air game highlights and recaps of tournament play, preview matchups and provide extensive coverage as part of its hour-long studio show "Hot Stove," which is broadcast each weeknight live at 7 p.m. ET.

I'd really like to start a Prime 9 thread to debate the show's lists, but would anyone participate in it? I love this show, but I don't have any friends who watch the network that I can debate with.

The one I'm watching now said Mike Piazza's 1997 was the 9th best hitting season of all time, which is bullpucky, considering Larry Walker was better that year.

Would a Prime 9 thread be a novel idea here?

mike piazza out ops+d walker that year by a decent margin, maybe they're statistically progressive at the mlb network

Their top 9 CFers were:

9) Kirby Puckett

8) Jim Edmonds

7) Duke Snider

6) Ken Griffey Jr.

5) Joe DiMaggio

4) Tris Speaker

3) Mickey Mantle

2) Ty Cobb

1) Willie Mays

I really liked that they had Speaker so highly (right where he should be I think). Shows that they put at least some thought into it.

They claimed OPS+ was the major deciding factor, and they only chose one season per player, but they chose the best seasons for Cobb, Gherig and some others who didn't even have the best OPS+ of their careers for that selection. Even so, it didn't matter. McGwires '98 wasn't on there and there's a 31 point increase in OPS+ between him and Piazza. I think they were basing it on importance of position in relation to their overall numbers and OPS+. Which I can understand why they chose Piazza, but Walker did have a much better OPS than Piazza, but the whole Colorado effect I guess made them choose otherwise. Piazza had a 185 OPS+ while Walker had a 179, but Walkers OPS was 1.172 compared to Piazza's 1.069.

Regardless, the list was jacked because they claimed they based it on OPS+ and they selected some seasons that weren't the best OPS seasons for the players chosen. IE Barry Bonds' 2001 (259) was chosen over his 2002 (268) or 2004 (263), mainly because of the home run record. Bleh, anyways. I love the show, and I love debating history

Jim Edmonds number 9? Really? He was excellent in his prime, but his prime was during the steroids era and his peak years were mysteriously short and came in his early 30's.

I might take Kenny Lofton over him, and Lofton definitely isn't among the top 9 CFs of all time.

Correct. I probably would have had Earl Averill in that spot.

MLB Network has way too many former players as their analysts. I thought they only had like 5 or 6, but there's more and more each day. I think I've seen like 10 or more of them. That's a bad recipe.

They got Alex Gonzalez on there now. Really? Is he going to provide any valuable insight? Maybe he can show us how to boot important ground balls.

I also don't like the ego strokes they give the current players they have on the show.

"Hi Cameron Maybin, show us how to play a ball off the wall"

"Well, the ball rolls, I run up to it, plant myself, grab it, and throw to the cut off man"

"You're a genius Cameron Maybin! Thanks for your time!"

Jim Edmonds was awesome, and should probably go to the hall of fame. The Kirby Puckett listing is the one that's outrageous, not Jimmy.

Agreed. Edmonds easily belongs on that list.

Today they featured Wrigley Field in the Cathedrals of the Game series. I didn't realize it until it was too late, but it's being repeated Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2:30 A.M. Eastern time.

One of the beautiful parts to a DVR. I have it set to record anything Cubs & Sports related. Lots of good undiscovered stuff has come from it. Highly recommended. I have a Direct TV DVR BTW

I watched it, it wasn't that special. All it did was talk about the history that we already know, showed some places around Chicago, mainly Harry Carays and the Billy Goat Tavern, and then it showed some places in the ballpark like the bleachers, the rooftops, scoreboard, press boxes, and the surrounding streets.

It wasn't very entertaining, it showed everything that we as Cubs fans know all too much about already. It was more of a "Wrigley Field For Dummies" approach.

"Oh Harry Caray sang the 7th inning stretch every game? Amazing!"

okay, so who do you think are the best and worst of the on-air talent so far?

i haven't watched enough to accurately choose, but i do know that al leiter needs to stop saying words

Ok, so I just moved into an apartment and got (had no choice) Comcast installed the other day. We got the digital package (probably the most basic one, I'm not sure) with HBO and a few HD DVRs.

Why the hell am I not getting MLB Network? It says unavailable. GDit... I guess I'll call them later today. Do any of you guys know if there's a minimum package I have to have or something? I figured it came in the regular digital package.

Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game is being aired this sunday at 5 pm central time.
It's part of a marathon of high-strikeout games.

I'd certainly watch it if I didn't already have it as part of the great Cubs games DVD set that came out a couple of years ago.
