I looked and didn't see this anywhere else. Feel free to move though.

How does everyone feel about this given our SS is hitting .320 in 87 games this season?

I would have felt differently had I been posed the question a couple months ago. His glove would be a massive improvement, though.

Huh.

A few months ago, I would have been estatic, but he's absolutely wretched at the plate this year. He's actually worse on the road than at Petco.

He could still be a very useful glove to have. I like the prospect of buying low on guys, though in this case it seems like the Padres won't sell low.

If we got him, it probably wouldn't be to supplant Theriot. He could replace Cedeno as the back-up SS. Greene also would be a player who you wouldn't feel worried about sitting Theriot for on occasion and you could use as a late inning defensive replacement without worrying about giving up offense.

Theriot has 11 errors, Greene has 7. Greene def. makes more 'OMG' plays though.

Greene is one of my 25 favorite players in baseball, and would have no problem with him on the Cubs. Maybe if they send Ronny somewhere in a deal this could be a cheap pickup, and a nice backup to Theriot.

Definitely more to fielding than errors and omg plays though. I havent looked up his other fielding metrics this year, but I'm assuming Greene is much better due to his numbers in previous years.

It's not about the errors, it's about the balls Theriot can't get to that Greene makes look routine. And the throws Theriot can't make that Greene can.

But Khalil has been awful offensively. It's a real reversal of statistical trend.

Thats what I was trying to convey with the 'OMG' plays.

I thought you meant flashy web gem type plays. I was talking about Greene making plays that look easy that Theriot wouldn't have a shot at.

I guess I didn't just mean web gems, but just plays in general that the average defensive SS either wouldn't make, or would just knock the ball down.

So we agree

Greene just needs a change of scenery.

I agree, but that still doesn't account for how bad he has been this year, unless he just isn't trying.

I think the Khalil Greene of 2004-2007 is an .800+ OPS guy in most parks.

Greene's career OBP is .305 no thank you unless strictly used as late game defensive replacement. The guy has never had an ounce of patience.

Never understood the love for this guy. Great glove, poor bat, big contract given the production (or lack of).

Poor patience, but big power being obscured by Petco. He's guy you could stick in the 7 hole and get a .500+ SLG out of in the vast majority of MLB parks. His OBP sucks, but his SLG would offset that.

That was before this year, anyway.

He also has a .249 career batting average. Meaning his ISODiscpline is .056 and he has a .067 BB/PA. Just as a reference (not saying he is or will ever be as good), Aramis Ramirez before 2008 had a BB/PA of .067 and an ISOD of .050.

People love Greene because he's a victim of PetCo park. For his career, he has a line of .271/.321/.487 for an OPS of .808 away from SD. At home, his line is .226/.289/.368 for an OPS of .657. Getting out of SD would be great for him.

That being said, I'd only want him now if we could get him for almost nothing. I'm talking a low-level prospect and maybe Cedeno or something. And I'd only want him because he could give us some RH pop off the bench and could give Theriot some time off. I fear Theriot wearing out again like last year.

Honestly, the lack of OBP is a huge concern. We all know Petco is the best pitchers park but I don't see how it makes a guy less patient or a pitcher throw more strikes. Greene isn't doing any better on the road, and that really shouldn't shock anyone, because patience works everywhere, regardless of how far the fence is from home plate, and impatience makes you an easier out. A strikeout is the same anywhere.

I remember a lot of speculation about how much better Alex Gonzalez would be coming over from Toronto, another good pitchers park. He was an impatient hitter, great glove, too. People speculated he'd hit 25-30 HR at Wrigley and be an .800 OPS guy. He proceeded to put up two unspectacular years with an OBPs of .312 and .295, with OPS of .737 and .704, hitting 20 and 18 HR. If you consider that OBP is the more important component of OPS, then it makes his offense look that much worse. I think we've been down this road before and we ought to know where it leads.
