Watching the Futures game, I could have sworn I saw that scroll across.

Have they been paying attention to this guy lately?

Yep--they just reported that on the SCORE this morning as well.

Maybe that will be a good confidence boost for him.

It is funny how we are sooooooooooooo high on players when they are playing well and sooooooooooooooooooo low on them when they are struggling.

I would hate to play for most of the people who post on here.

Yes, it was just confirmed on The Score's baseball report. Clint Hurdle added him and now the Cubs have 8 All Stars Edited by 98navigator

I'm not liking this at all.

I'd prefer he had the time off as well.

That said, perhaps this will help his confidence, which appears to have been flagging of late.

Im not going to say that Marmols done for, but truggling would be an understatement for recent recent performances. At any rate, he must have been chosen by the coaching staff, meaning they felt that he gave them the best chance to win among NL Relievers. Personally, Id go with JC Romero over Marmol at this point in time.

I'm of the camp that doesn't believe confidence is the problem.

It doesnt matter. He has a 4.13 ERA for the season as a setup guy on a team that already has 7 other All Stars. He was just booed off the mound at his home ballpark yesterday. I'm not saying Marmol doesn't have All Star caliber talent. It's just a really strange and awkward time to be named an All Star. Maybe this was Lou lobbying to Hurdle in an attempt to get Marmol's confidence up. Still really bizarre.

I called this a month ago after realizing that Marmol did some of his best work against Hurdle's Rockies at Wrigley in May.

Hopefully, he won't pitch but I do think Marmol was disappointed to have not been named earlier. I saw him interviewed on CSN, before the selections were announced, and he was lobbying hard for a spot. It may be a much needed boost for him to attend.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. Reportedly, Lou lobbied Hurdle to get Z on the team...

If true, then that means Lou and Larry think it's a confidence thing.

I like Marmol and think he can rebound, but if he's an All-Star then I'm a trillionnaire. An ERA over 4.00 for a setup man isn't even in the same solar system of being an All-Star. Got to be one of the worst All-Star choices in history, perhaps the worst if you don't consider choices made because of the one-player-per-team rule. And Marmol DESPERATELY needs the time off to rest anyway.

From ESPN.com
Marmol (2-3, 4.13 ERA, 3 Sv, 52.1 IP, 29 H, 70 SO) was selected because he was the relief pitcher who received the next highest vote total on the Player Ballot.

I was coming here to post that this was probably the case. Hurdle has paid attention to the player voting very, very closely when replacing people in the starting lineup/roster. That's the same reason that was given for Holliday being given the starting nod, for example.

It's funny how the system works. You're absolutely right about Marmol as he's been pitching lately, but apparently he was selected to take Woody's roster spot because he was the reliever with the next highest vote total on the player's ballot. So at the time that the voting was conducted - I don't know when that was exactly, figure a month-month and a half ago - he was still Good Carlos. Couple that with the facts that

- Marmol did some of his best work against Colorado, including that 10 pitch, 3 strikeout inning against them in May

- Hurdle, as has been previously stated, appears to be following the player vote to the letter

and you get Carlos Marmol chartering a flight to New York tonight.

I agree. I think the time off will do him more good than a confidence boost, so hopefully he doesn't come into the game. Hopefully a couple of the all-star hitters from other teams will drop him a line on what he's doing wrong or why they're suddenly smacking him around. I don't know why they'd do that, but hopefully one or two will be a chatty-kathy and reveal something to him, so he can benefit from just being there.
