I take back half the nasty things I've said about the man. But, I'm one to hold grudges, and it'll still take more for him to be completely forgiven for Dusty, Neifi, Macias, Bynum, Ordonez, etc.

I officially forgive him for Dusty Baker being in the dugout during the 2003 Playoffs.

2004/2005/2006...eh, I'll forgive him for that when the World Series win is in hand. Gotta keep him motivated. \:D/

For all of his negatives, he's an extremely hard-working guy who seems respected by other GM's. He's made some major mid-season acquisitions in '03, '04, '08 when we were in contention and each time he hasn't really given up much.

Since Dusty left town I think he's done a very good job overall. Plus I think it would be really fun to have a few beers with him.

Dempster, Theriot, Harden, Edmonds, Fukudome...

executive of the year

if you ask me

I've been a critic of his in the past. However, he turned Matt Murton, a throw in the Nomar deal, into a chip in getting a certified ace.

Mike Fontenot was the "other player" in the Sosa deal and Mike's been pretty valuable to this team. We all know about the Aramis and D-Lee trades. Of course, he has had a few duds in free agency (Jacque Jones, Burnitz, Marquis) to name a few.

However, he signed guys like DeRo, Edmonds, and Randall Simon in 2003.

The guys has two division titles to his credit and is now shooting for the whole ball of wax.

kudos, Jim.

PS: Jim, go get us Burnett and I'll really be impressed.

Not to bring up old demon arguments but people blaming him for Dusty's hire are just being unfair and dumb. When we hired him away from SF a large large majority loved it and kept loving it right up until the implosion of 2004.

We can also look at it as since MacPhail left. That may be just as significant.

Dusty did lead us the closest to the promised land since 1945. Its just too bad he went mad afterword.

If the Cubs win the World Series this year, he's officially forgiven for everything.

Yeah seriously, lets not get carried away here we haven't even secured a playoff spot yet

True.

True.

It's at least my perception that Hendry has had more free reign since MacPhail left. I think McDonough realized that he's a marketing person, not a baseball person, and left most of the baseball decisions up to Hendry.

Jim, I'm sorry I doubted your ability to work Billy Beane over in a trade.

I can't believe I just said that

Hendry took over as Cubs GM midway through 2002.

His trades with Oakland:

Traded Damian Miller for Michael Barrett

A 3 team deal where the Cubs got Freddie Bynum, A's got Juan Dominguez(gave up John Rheinecker as well)

Traded Mark Watson to Oakland on a conditional deal

Jerome Williams was taken off waivers by Oakland

Traded Jerry Blevins and Rob Bowen for Jason Kendall

I'm not sure Hendry has "lost" a trade to Beane yet. I guess Blevins could still make that one a loser, and the Cubs being forced to have Freddie Bynum for a season may have qualified as well.

He was just as bad, if not at his worst, in 2003.

And for the record, there were plenty of knowledgeable fans who were against the Dusty hire. I was sort of guardedly optimistic/neutral about it, but I had my concerns about his handling of pitchers and his veteran love.

Beane's weakness: His friendship with Hendry. BFF

Those are pretty minor deals and I'm not sure either team really lost. But I wouldn't rush to say Beane got worked over yet. I don't remember too many reports about how Beane worked over the Cards in the Mulder deal until Haren became a stud in Oakland. If Harden's arm falls off in a few weeks and Gallagher becomes an ace for 2-3 years in Oakland, we might have a different view of this deal.

I think this was a great deal for Hendry - he gets a high risk/high reward ace but was smart to get an insurance SP to replace the insurance SP he was giving up. Oakland got a lot of young players that are cheap and they can control for a while (I wouldn't be surprised if Murton and EPatt play LF and 2B respectively and are solid contributors for several years). I think both teams got what they wanted. It's not like Beane probably wanted to hold Harden too much longer. One more DL stint and he'd barely get pennies on the dollar - if anything - this year.

As for an apology - that'll come with a WS win and sustained success (meaning 90+ wins for several years running).
