Was there any mention of Hendry pursuing other deals? We sure have plenty of chips left

i'm not sure how much more the cubs need. when healthy, the lineup is:

LF soriano

RF fukudome

1B lee

3B ARam

C Soto

2B derosa

CF edmonds/johnson

ss theriot

bench:

ward

johnson/edmonds

fontenot

blanco

cedeno

rotation:

zambrano

harden

lilly

dempster

marquis

bullpen:

gaudin

lieber

wuertz

marmol

wood

howry

eyre

with the possibility that marshall or hill replaces marquis in the rotation, or one of the bullpen arms if someone is on the DL. i don't see the cubs upgrading at SS right now, and CF has been fine with edmonds and johnson - plus possibly pie as a defensive replacement in september. i guess if some good LOOGY guys hit the market i could see hendry dabbling for one, but aside from that, the cubs don't need much.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly, but I was curious to see what others thought. I think we are well set up for a very strong run. Wouldn't mind another mid-rotation starter if it means we can dump Marquis on someone either

Hendry's press confererence on espnews

You got to love Jim bringing up his obsession with LH bats during the Harden press conference.

Mind giving some notes for those of us who don't have ESPNews?

He praised Beane's professionalism and honesty in negotiations.

Said he asked about Harden maybe 6 weeks ago, but things got a little more serious 10 days ago.

He's got a pretty big smile.

Gives Murton and Patterson a chance to get more playing time, and thinks Sean can be a really good starter for them right away.

He's still in the mode he's always in which is constantly looking to improve the team (this seems to be a standard response for him, so I wouldn't take it as he's about to make another move or anything).

Thanks a bunch. I'm not expecting anything really except maybe a bat for the bench. Getting Soriano back will be an addition in itself.

This is exactly who i wanted, even more than CC.

I wanted Sabathia first over Harden due to injury concerns but if Harden can stay fully healthy yes, I'd rather have Harden pitching for me over Sabathia.

Posted
was Harden on the AL All Star team?

No, he was injured for a good part of the beginning of the season.

Probably a good thing, too, as if he'd been healthy all year we wouldn't have gotten him for what we did.

Rothschild? He can't change his uniform number for an ace pitcher?

Larry's on his 3rd uni number as the Cubs PC (47, 41, 40). I don't think he'll have a problem giving up No. 40 for Harden.

Maybe he should go with 44.

Fox has it now, but I doubt he comes back.

can we just DFA Marquis and use Marshall/Gaudin/Lieber in his spot?

I gotta say to you guys congrats. On paper this is a completely one sided steal. It makes the CC deal look pretty bad.

Of course as many have said it depends on if Beane knows something about Harden's arm that the cubs don't, but either way a great gamble. Looking forward to Sheets v Z and CC v Harden in late July.

I think it's still worth exploring a trade for another starter since we still have pretty much all of our valuable chips. What if AJ Burnett was added to the rotation as well? Man oh man.

I don't really see the Cubs with any really pressing needs right now. Sure, we could maybe upgrade at 2nd or SS or possibly CF if you don't think Edmonds can keep it up, but I wouldn't pursue it heavily unless some other GM came to us and made an offer that Hendry would be dumb to turn down. Maybe we could upgrade the bench a bit, but we're still pretty good there. We're set in the OF once Soriano gets back, corner INF is good, C is good, rotation and bullpen are good. I think we're set.

Sweet, I'll give Jim Hendry a call. It worked for Sweet Swingin Billy Williams ;)

Saturday game being on CSN is fine for the Chicago types, but FOX blacks out EVERY GAME on Saturdays between Noon and 7 or 8pm EDT

Between 1:10 and 7:05. Cubs aren't in that window. You'll get the game.

Haha, WSI is a fun read right now. The two extremes are that the league is conspiring to help the Cubs or that this was in fact a steal for Oakland.

I have no idea what number Harden will wear, but I wanted a jersey in my sig.

He wore 40 with Oakland, I assume he'd keep it.

Yeah, they wouldn't let you use that number, so maybe. What number does Larry go to then?

Oh yeah, Larry. Hmm.

I'd guess one of them will wear 36.

Is this Harden's last year for his current contract?

No. He has either a vesting or a club option for next year for only $7 million. If it doesn't vest, it can be picked up by the Cubs, who IMO would be morons not to take that chance.

Is there a spot on the 25-man open now? Who gets called up?

And could we see Gaudin in the #5 spot? I would take him over Marquis.
