If we play like that this weekend in St. Louis we are in trouble.

We'll have some very important pieces back, so I don't see that happening.

And the Cards have no one with stuff in the same realm as Cain's.

Regardless of whom we were facing tonight, we played poorly. Too many strikeouts looking (in fairness, a big zone, but you must adjust), that steal attempt in the first should have drawn no throw from Soto but instead the Giants scored a run, no clutch hits, etc...

Let's face it, that was as frustrating a game as I've seen in a little while and I'm pissed.

I guess I'm one of the only ones who didn't feel like we played particularly badly tonight. Cain's a very frustrating pitcher to have on your team because he's on and off. At times he's unhittable, at other times he's missing his spots and leaving pitches over the middle of the plate.

Tonight, especially in the last 3-4 innings, he was hitting his spots almost every pitch. The Cubs just didn't have much of a chance against him, and they weren't able to cash in on the 1-2 tiny chances they got in the first 8 innings. They tried to fight back once he left the game, but didn't have quite enough.

The Cubs got beat by a guy with great stuff who was completely on tonight. The Cubs were throwing their #4/#5 starter. With the way that Cain was pitching, it would have been one of the best absolute stolen games of the year if the Cubs could have found a way to win. They didn't, but I didn't think it was particularly bad that they couldn't tonight.

To start, I'm not terribly upset with the loss tonight, everything considered.

However, I was just thinking. Is it just me, or does Marquis have a tendency to have starts like he did tonight -- where he's "just good enough to lose". I feel like he's done that a few times -- gone up against a guy who was dealing and given up just 1 or 2 runs more. Very frustrating.

I agree. Cain was definitely on. Outside of the double steal in the first, I don't feel the Cubs played "badly" at all. They just got shut down by someone who has shown numerous times he can be an excellent pitcher while missing some critical starters.

Well, when the pitches the called 3rd strikes are on are unhittable because they're 8-10 inches off the plate, I can't complain about the hitting much. That, and the umps zone went from huge outside corner on the LH side of the plate early to huge corner on the RH side of the plate later in the game. His zone was pretty inconsistent the whole game IMO.

Unfortunatley, one of the few good outings we'll probably see from Marquis the rest of the way was wasted.
