Sorry to sound cryptic. Anyway, after the past 2 games, its clear that we REALLY need another starter. With CC Sabathia likely staying in Cleveland, and Rich Harden not going anywhere as long as the A's are contending, AJ Burnett is the next option, but there is another, but most of you wont like it. Hint: were facing him Monday, and we'd have to be willing to bail another GM out of an idiotic contract.

Yes, I do expect a barage of rage for this sugestion.

Today's game does NOT show that we need another starter. What it DOES show is that Dempster, as good as he's been this year, is human and can have an occasional stinker just like anybody. Making any judgments based on today's game is extreme overreaction.

Let's throw contract out of the equation for a second (although it's an absolutely killer deterrant). Let's just look at Zito the pitcher.

If you look at the pitcher, how is Zito supposed to help us? Last year, he would have been not really better then any player in the Cubs rotation. This year, he's been significantly worse than anybody in the rotation. How is he better than any pitcher the Cubs have right now?

When you're adding a pitcher who is a question mark on if he's even an upgrade to your worst starter, that's a bad deal. When that pitcher has a 100 million dollars still left on his contract, it would be one of the worst deals in the history of the league. This is not even a Mike Hampton goes to Colorado situation. Zito would be coming from pitching mostly in pitching parks to mostly either neutral or hitters parks in the Central.

I can totally see the Hendry press conference.

"This guy is certainly a gamer. Now obviously he has had a tough start to the season, but we're pretty sure we've got a pitcher who is going to give us the type of pitcher performances that we need. This guy is a Cy Young winner who will obviously give us some strong innings this season."

Correct, however we do need another starter.

No argument on that point; I'm just arguing that today's outing didn't make that more obvious (as the original post seemed to imply).

I guess we might as well start threads about every other crappy player who won't help us win who could be traded for. By that estimate thats about 50% of all players even in baseball.

Agreed. Dempster isn't the reason why the Cubs need another starter. Jason Marquis is the reason why the Cubs need another starter.

Yeah, we should definitely go after a pitcher who hasn't shown any signs of life as a #1 or even a #2 (or a #3, #4, or #5), who also happens to make $18 million a year. Who also has a full no-trade clause.

Where can I sign?

No doubt Hendry would also mention three-time All Star.

And probably "Our pitching coaches having been studying the video and have spotted the problem with Zito's mechanics yada yada"
