Chicago Cubs

The Cubs might be one of the more likely destinations for Bedard, as they are in high-geared win-now mode under Lou Piniella, and have a few young players that might be a fit.

Currently the Cubs rotation consists of Carlos Zambrano, when healthy, Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Jason Marquis and Sean Gallagher.

If the Cubs are willing to include Gallagher in a deal with third base prospect Josh Vitters, that might be the best the Mariners can do, and should be happy with that.

Gallagher and tarnished center fielder Felix Pie would be interesting as well, though personally I’m not sold Pie is a big-leaguer.

The Cubs have two future starter in the minors in Jose Ceda (No. 3-4) and left-hander Donald Veal (No. 4), that could be included in a trade.

If I were the Mariners I’d pass on the Cubs since Ceda, Gallagher and Veal are No. 3 starter at best, Pie is marginal and Vitters is three or four years away.

Do we want to give up Gallagher and Vitters for a guy whose looked awful this season?
And who sets his own pitch counts?

And has a bad back.

Gallagher, no. Vitters, yes.

Way too early to give up on Vitters. I'd include him in a deal for a solid #2 or better. I don't think Bedard could be counted on to be much more than a 4 or 5 this year.

I wouldn't trade Gallagher for Bedard....not at the moment.

Neither would I. I really don't want them to get Bedard if all of the rumors about him in the press are true, not even if it's cheap.

I don't want Bedard. He's an injury risk, is inconsistent, and is the type of guy that would fold under the pressure of playing in a big market. Bedard is only concerned about picking up his paycheck, he couldn't care less about the game.

I would like this trade a lot, but I'm afraid this acquisition would totally neutralize Rich Hill.

Rich Hills doing a good enough job of doing that on his own.

Right. But if and when he gets it back together, and there are already two lefties in the rotation, I'm afraid he won't be given a chance in the rotation due to old-timey manager baseball theory bs.

I agree with LLF when he said: "Do we want to give up Gallagher and Vitters for a guy whose looked awful this season"?

I'd give up Gallagher, Vitters and more for Sabaitha (spelling?) but not for Bedard.

In a heartbeat. However, The Yankees have more of what the Indians want than we do, and if the Yankees dangle Kennedy and Hughes, nobodys going to match that.

Burnett and Blaton/Harden are the most logical targets right now. Looking at the A's depth chart, youf think theyd love to get their hands on Hoffpauir, Murton, or maybe even Cedeno. OK, maybe not Cedeno, but I think Murton, Hoff, and either Hill or Marshall could land us Harden.

" Pie is marginal "?

I thought this was one of Hendry's untouchables?

Do you ever have anything to post other than digs at the Cubs, management, etc?

Seriously people?

Bedard has a 3.97 ERA this year. Allowing a .233 opp. batting average. Striking out more than 8 per 9. 2:1 K/BB ratio. Quality starts in 7 of 12 games and 2 more 5 IP, 1 ER or less. Three disaster starts make his numbers look worse. He has horrible numbers on the road, but his road starts have been @ Bos, @ NYY x 2, @ Tex, @ TB. And has been pretty dominant at home. Also, keep in mind the Mariners have been the 2nd worse defensive team in baseball, barely better than the Pirates. The Cubs are 3rd best.

The only disturbing thing about his numbers is the amount of fly balls he's been giving up. Was more of a groundball pitcher typically, but has given up more FB outs this year, and thus his HR rate has climbed. But Bedard is not a bad pitcher. In fact, I'd say he's a legit #2 starter when healthy. His injury history is better than Burnett and Harden's. I'd rather go after Sabathia, because he's better. Burnett because he'll come cheaper. But I'd consider Gallagher and Vitters for Bedard if it came down to that.

no, which is why he hasn't been around much the past couple of months. not a lot to rip right now, what with the cubs having the best record in baseball.

When they hoist the Series trophy, they will get all the props they deserve.

Until then, the "best record in baseball" on June 21 means squat.

"why he hasn't been around much the past couple of months"? not that it's any of your business, but my son learned to walk so my computer time is limited.

Waaaay too many people take this way too seriously.

Color me uninterested given what it would take. I'm very high on Gallagher at this point and I don't want to give him up.

Vitters is a long way away from making the majors. He arguably has the highest ceiling of any prospect in the system, but because he is so far from the majors, I don't think he'd get much interest from most teams as the central piece in a trade.

How would you know this?

He's pretty much come out and said it. I'm friends with a couple of O's fans and they've told me the same.

Ah gotcha...I thought you were trying to be one of those posters who pretends they can read a player's mind.

Wait, was that sarcasm?
