As far as these sorts of statements go, I thought this was actually a pretty well written explanation:

"John worked extremely hard, but our team continued to underperform compared to our expectations of them," Pelekoudas said. "With 90 games left on our schedule, we owe it to ourselves and our fans to do everything we can to win as many games as possible. At the same time, as we move towards the trade deadline and decisions have to be made on the futures of the players on our ballclub, I wanted to see if a different voice could make a difference in their performance."

Good for Riggs. One of the best I've ever worked with. He's a good manager _ always well prepared. It's too bad he had Ed Lynch as a GM. And Riggs is even a better guy than he is a manager. I never once saw him berate a question or a questioner. And he always had a reasonable-sounding explanation for whatever move he made.

this was too bad for everyone involved.

He'd be the worst GM in club history if it wasn't for Larry Himes. And even then, I'm not convinced he's not the worst.

That's two ex-Cubs managers in a year to get another gig managing. When was the last time that a former Cubs manager got another managing job after being fired from the Cubs (okay, I know Dusty wasn't technically fired...)? I can't think of any in my lifetime. Some have been coaches, but I can't think of any other managers.

Bruce, I have to agree with you on Jimmy. He is one of the best and I am thrilled to see him finally get another shot albeit under really poor circumstances. I do hope it works out for him...I need to get in touch and wish him luck. Met Jimmy a good 10 years ago when he save me from the lecherous Manny Alexander (Manny, leave the nice lady alone...LOL).

Jim Lefebvre got an interim job in Milwaukee.

HUH??? I met Jim Riggleman when I went to see the Cubs on a road trip in 1998. Let's just say...I don't work for Tribune anymore. I left of my own accord.

I know we're being sarcastic and poking fun and everything, but I wouldn't mind more of this Manny Alexander/Riggleman story...
