This trade is not going to happen. I'm at home doing some computer training at the office, so I'm not with the team, but I checked it out. Cubs haven't seriously discussed Crisp internally since spring training. One thing about scouts is this: Almost every team has them all over the place. Kravec could have been looking at a number of players. That's what he does. But with Edmonds and Johnson doing reasonably well, and even a little better than that, and Soriano coming back eventually, something like this makes no sense.

I never really gave this much credence, but then again I never say never when it comes to the cubs. Thanks for clearing it up Bruce!

Thanks for being a voice of sanity among the media. So are the reports that the Cubs are going to be aggressive in acquiring players in a trade true?

And it must suck that you missed the trip to Tampa.

I do think the Cubs will be aggressive in pursuing what they feel their needs are. Hendry has the green light from management to do what it takes financially.

Thanks. Let's hope that means we get Burnett, Sabathia, or Harden.

Would you go for Penny?

What do you feel the Cubs feel their needs are?

Are they looking to go all-in on a front line starter? Or will they look to upgrade elsewhere (also)?

While this probably wont happen, you guys are once again over valueing cubs players. Nobody wants murton his power has regressed alot and he is a mediocre defender at best. And like another poster said Hill has hit rock bottom and is struggling with AAA hitters. I was begging for Hill to be traded last year because he was likely to regress this year. He has a mediocre 89mph fastball, spotty command, a big predictable/overused curve ball, and a crappy change up that he never uses. Add into that the fact that he is 28 years old, cant hold runners on base, and despite his intelligence appears easily shook and mentally weak on the mound. Sure he k's alot of people but dont kid yourself other teams are going to look at all of that other stuff as well.

Are other teams going to look at what Hill's done in the majors the last 2 seasons? Hill's fastball is more 91ish than 89, he had a pretty good walk rate last year, and he has a great curveball.

That, and Coco Crisp blows.

I never said I want Coco Crisp, instead I mentioned that it probably wont happen because we already have a glut of outfielders. Hill has only had one season in the mlb when he pitched well. He was crap from sept on last year and good from the august forward the year before. As per velocity he doesnt have much 89-91 what ever its got no movement so it might as well be 86. Hes got nothing to go with the curve ball which is why he throws it three or four times an at bat.

How do you suppose he gets so many strike outs with only one pitch that's worth a damn?

because that pitch is the best curveball in baseball when he can locate it

No it's not, it's predictable and overused.

when he locates it no one is able to hit it that's why he can strike guys out at a good rate. The key word is when.

You guys are something else. Apparently Rich Hill has worse stuff than Kirk Reuter but the fact that he had the 2nd best K/9 for a lefty in the NL in 2007 behind Cole Hamels is all some kind of phantom illusion.

Weak. Every time people post about him his stuff gets worse. Guess what? Major league hitters don't have a K/9 of over 8 against a guy with an 88 mph and a loopy, cheesy curveball. They also generally don't have a 1.19 WHIP and a .235 BAA.

Sully had to beat the deadline and the bourbon started talking to him and told him of this deal.

Hmmm...Hendry has the green light for a pitcher, eh? I hope Z is alright and if he isn't Hendry is going to have to dump the farm to fix the rotation.

I hope the Crisp talk dies quickly. Offensively, he's not better than what we have, and defensively, he's not better than Pie so there's no reason to do this. If Bruce is right, the Cubs aren't really looking at CF as a need anymore. I don't have that much faith in Edmonds, and one of Theriot/Soto or both are likely to slump in the second half. I'd still like to see what we could get in CF after we acquire a SP.

...or at the same time. I think the Blue Jays would like to get out of Vernon Wells' contract. Burnett and Wells for every spare part we have. That'll be going all in for this year.

Who knows what it will cost us. Wells came back quicker than they expected.

Didn't Vernon Wells sign an extension well over $100 mill with Toronto?

Yes. After this year, he's due 117 million over the next 6 seasons. To compare, Soriano is due to make 106 million over the same 6 years left on his deal. This for a guy who hasn't had better than a .762 OPS on the road in the past 5 years. He had a .706 OPS overall last year and has a .761 so far this year.

There's no way I would want Wells. He might put up 2 years out of 6 that are in line with his contract. Plus, adding a contract that is higher than Soriano's makes the Cubs adding payroll anytime in the next year and a half iffy, and adding an overpaid Wells is not worth that.

Problem is between those two we'd be taking on a lot of contract. Wells' contract is awful and Burnett's is not wonderful either. The only way this would happen is if the Cubs sent some salary back in the deal, and there aren't many likely candidates to deal. We don't know how much, if any, salary the Cubs can take on with the impending sale. If they did this deal, it would put the Cubs close to BoSox territory in terms of payroll.
