Since I don't follow the minor league forum as much as you guys obviously do. How is Dae-Eun Rhee been doing? I know he's been injured for awhile and his MiLB game log says that he has been pitching well his last few starts, but only for 3-4 inning stints. I know he is only 19 and its his first season in American pro ball, but is he a pitcher we should be getting excited about? Assuming he stays injury free, is it a possibility we see him at Tennessee or even Iowa this year or are the Cubs going to take it really slow with him?

Since we have no talent about to reach the big league level, and no sure thing in the lower minors, guys with a lot of upside are all I have right now. Tell me I can be excited about him.

i think hill retired. he's not listed as a starter for any of iowa's next five games. thanks for the memories, rich.

I think he's starting for the Schaumburg Flyers this week.

Rhee is a prospect to be excited about. His short outings are mostly a function of a pitch count as he recovers from his injury. And there's no way he sees Tennessee this season.

So assuming no major speed bumps, we're looking at a conservative ETA of sometime in 2010?

Conservative would be 2012(2009 A+, 2010 AA, 2011 AAA). If he advances well it might be sometime in 2011.

Well, that's strange. He was on the Iowa roster as of last night. Haven't found anything on the Internet.

Wow, I always thought pitchers could move up the system much quicker than hitters. I realize he is a foreign prospect that is probably extremely raw, and I understand keeping him in Peoria this year, but I figure if he dominates in Peoria, why not bring him up to Tennessee to start next year. And if he does well in Tennessee, why not Iowa to start 2010. And if he's still pitching well in Iowa, and we need a spark in Chicago bring him up during the year.

But this is why you guys know the system better than I

Well, you asked for the conservative estimate. He could move up quicker than that, but I think it's tough to envision him being a possibility for the Major League club before 2011. He's not a college pitcher with a lot of high level instruction and experience, he needs time to refine his repertoir. For comparison, Zambrano pitched in Low A in 1999, and aside from a September callup, he wasn't a factor in the Majors til 2002. Jae-Kuk Ryu spent part of 2002 and most of 2003 in Lansing, but didn't hit Iowa until 2006(although he had a 30 IP season, due to injury I believe).

It really doesn't matter whether he's a foreign born prospect or American. Pitchers tend to graduate one level per year at the lower levels when they're younger (most foregn prospects, HS draftees) while the older pitchers who are more advanced move up at a quicker speed (college draftees).

There's no point in skipping Daytona just because he succeeds or even dominates in Peoria, you have to determine he's ready to skip all the way to AA to do that. There's no point in doing that since he's so young and still pretty raw - he has a lot that he can learn at high-A next season (if all goes well this season). I could see a call up to Daytona in August if things continue well well for him this season.

Z moved up at a much quicker pace than most pitchers his age and experience would, mainly because his stuff was advanced enough to get players out at higher levels. Rhee's stuff isn't anywhere near as good as teenage Z's stuff.

what's the standard IP count for high school pitchers coming up through a system before hitting the majors? Isn't it something like 500-600 IP? Rhee will have barely more than 200 IP at tne end of 2009 if he stays healthy and doesn't miss time. I'd think anything before 2012 would be fairly aggressive.

I'm excited to see what Pawelek does. I think its still very early in his career, and he can definately turn it around. From the reports AZL Phil had been giving, he has been consistantly 90-93 in EXT. Lets just hope he can control it! I think tonight marks the beginning of a great turn around, in a very young career!

21-year old catcher Welington Castillo is now up to a .353/.421/.559 line in 34 AA at bats.

RHP Jesse Estrada was promoted from Tennessee to Iowa.

The MLB Australian Academy game for Wednesday was rained out.

If IowaCubs.com is correct, I'd imagine that he'd be headed back to the DL (although since it's been 7 days since he last pitched, he'd be eligible to come off of it right away) or he has just been included in a super mega awesome trade.

But I'd say his back is more likely the reason.

Geovany already has an heir apparent, huh?

Does Matt Craig have a snowballs hope in hell of at least making it to Iowa, or will they just keep signing hacks like DuBois and Brousard? Hes always seemed to put up solid numbers. Hes 27, and running out of time.

Craig is on the DL for Tennessee.

Ugh. Today's Iowa Cubs game notes were released and there is nothing on Hill. In fact, they have Kevin Hart as the probable pitcher in 5 games. Rich is still on the roster and is not listed on their transactions page.

Bullpen, anyone?

By the way, Ascanio is expected to rejoin the team this week.

Could it be that they realized the minor league experiment wasn't working and have just decided to make him throw side sessions and simulated games until he works things out? He definitely seems like he's going the Ankiel route...except he sucks at hitting.

Maestri sporting a nifty 10 K/0 BB ratio through 6 for Daytona (though he has given up 2 ER on 6 H).
