And Daniel Orton asking out of UK.

W00t.

Scout.com's story listed Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, USC ( :-s ), UCLA ( :-s ), Kansas and Memphis as possibilities.

Orton supposedly loves KU and Manning. And Manning is very high on him. But I have no idea where he would fit in. We have about 42 big men, we're already over the limit on schollies I think. And if he get X, that would take us out of the running. Still, the Scout national recruiting guru has indicated KU is interested.

If you're over the limit on schollies how are you fitting Henry in?

i gotta be honest, that kind of bums me out, even though it means we have room for a difference maker. College sports can be pretty nasty.

It is what it is. The coaches get paid a lot and have to win. I don't like it, but I get it.

Oh, it's the right thing to do for the program. And if the kids are interested in ever playing, it was the right move for them, too. It just kinda sucks it has to be that way. Your final sentence sums it up nicely.

A kid like Appleton could have gotten a ton of minutes and been a difference maker at ISU (whom I think was a finalist). When you join Kansas at the stage in which he joined them, it shouldn't be surprising if you get recruited over.

I understand it's an ego thing and all the peeps around them say they're the man. It just comes down to whether you want to play for an average/below average team or never play for a really good team.

A kid like Isaiah Dahlman was down to Iowa and Michigan State when Alford was still here and was ranked right around 100 nationally. He probably would have had a really prominent role (especially in Lickliter's offense) at Iowa and helped win some more games. Instead he's basically never played a meaningful minute in 3 years. Maybe he would still do that again, I just don't get it sometimes.

He did get to take part in a championship game appearance though. But yeah, he probably would have liked to play. I think the thing about the top 100 kids is they all think that they are good enough to play no matter what. But, in reality, if you're a borderline top 100 kid Carolina or Kansas probably isn't the place for you. Wear twins, I'm looking at you.

As far as Orton, he asked for his release immediately after BCG was let go. Right now, UK is supposedly Orton's 1st choice and the soon to be Bluegrass festival will likely be the stage as whether he confirms his decision one way or the other.

Hypothetical question: if a kid doesn't have his scholarship renewed, does he still have to sit out a year to play elsewhere?

Almost certain this is the case.

I think if you petitioned the NCAA you might get a ruling in your favor for hardship. Has this ever happened? Doesn't the kid always transfer before it gets to this?

I've never heard of it happening.

It seems like a pretty unfair process, though. The school can pull schollies whenever they want, but the kids are penalized if they want to switch schools.

It's kind of a technicality. The scholarship "getting pulled" and the transfer are essentially simultaneous events. The kid can't petition to get the year waived unless he's trying to play somewhere else via transfer.

Right, but what IG is saying is this. Say KU wanted to add X Henry. But none of the guys wanted to transfer, so we were still over the limit. Self can elect to not renew a a kid's scholly. Kid has no choice in the matter, because they're one year contracts.

So now the kid is out in the cold. He can stay at KU (and pay his own way), or he can transfer elsewhere in search of a new scholly. But he has to sit out a year. Even though it wasn't his "choice" to leave the school.

Now, this scenario is pretty unlikely. Any college coach that does that would endure a PR nightmare. Still, the way the system is set up, it's possible, and not only does the student get screwed once, he gets screwed again by having to sit out a year.

My point is, I can't ever recall a guy officially getting his scholly pulled followed by a transfer. The most you'll hear is "encouraged to transfer," but be it PR or whatever, you pretty much never hear "scholarship pulled" for anything but discilplinary reasons.

Oh, agreed. I've tried to make it pretty clear this is super unlikely. I'm just wondering what would happen if it did go down like that.

I would imagine that you would never be able to recruit from that kids state again. I mean you would hope it would never come to that.
