From Foxsports on top prospects that have turned out flops:

4. Felix Pie

He's still quite young at 23, but he was a flop in his debut with the Cubs last season and was sent down this year in favor of the aged Jim Edmonds. He is starting to be eerily like Corey Patterson, who was equally as hyped but never reached the predicted stardom. The Orioles didn't want Patterson anymore and it's beginning to be clear why they didn't want Pie as part of any Brian Roberts trade. The excuse given for the Orioles is that they already had center field filled with Adam Jones, but Jones or Pie could have been moved if the Orioles had been impressed enough with Pie.

The fact that the Cubs aren't just giving him the centerfield job, when they've had a crying need for one, is an indication of how unsure they are of Pie. With the addition of all-out gamer Reed Johnson, the days of Pie being in the Cubs' outfield may already be over. In 23 games with Triple-A Iowa, Pie is hitting .183/.232/.355.

No. He was having a great year despite his obvious flaws.

I'm still not ready to write off a 23 year old who has some obvious skills. Not everyone barnstorms into the league in their early 20's and never looks back.

He was coming down to earth right before he got hurt as well.

I thought that had been proven false?

Anyway, I'd like to believe his career would have turned out different, but it probably wouldn't have.

Corey was batting .250/.318/.300 the week leading up to the injury. The week before that, it was .217/.333/.391. Before that it was .167/.231/.208. Overall in that last month, he was hitting .238/.291/.356.

I think it is a shame. Pie can be good obviously can't be 100% sure but a prospect isn't going to do well when he can't play everyday and must wonder everyday if he will see the field. Edmonds is doing well recently so I'm not too angry over this but this is how I look at it. Put him in the 8 hole and he's an average hitter for that spot because he has more power than most 8 hitters would have and in the field he is GG caliber. So you have a premier defensive CF and an average 8 hole hitter that would likely improve over time. I don't ever see Pie being a great hitter but given a year to work out problems he I think at least would be a .270 hitter with 15-20 Hr's a year and a great defender. That isn't too bad, not great but something we could be set with for 10 years.

Yep, Pie's a complete flop. If a young player doesn't make it in his first 200 or so at-bats, then he's done. This has been proven many times. Just ask Carlos Pena, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Gonzalez, Brandon Phillips...

I agree. When has he been given a legitimate shot to play CF on an everyday basis? I hope we don't give up on him too soon.

..? He was awesome last year in his rookie season.

He's not a flop but I am quickly losing all hope that he will ever live up to any thing close to his expectations. He can still field and I realize he hasn't been given a real sot to hit, but every at bat for him seems to be horrible. Hard to say though since he was never given even a medium sized leash.

The Cubs as an organization have to be doing something wrong with their young players. In the years between Mark Grace and Geovany Soto there have been so many position player prospects that have just completely busted, and a few here and there that have made it as role players and journeymen. I refuse to believe that this is just bad luck.

I wish the Cubs had more prospects who come into the majors guns a-blazing, ala Albert Pujols, and Miguel Cabrera. But the simple fact is to call a prospect a flop due to a small sample size is crazy. For some players, it'll take longer to developed. No with Pie, he has great defensive capabilities to play in the majors right now, so at worst, he would be a half-flop, seeing as his defense is there. It's his offense, that needs help.

If the Cubs would be patient with him (maybe they will, if they get this monkey off their back, if you know what I mean) he will become a very good player.

I really wish Pedroia would have been given the Pie treatment last year. That way boston fans could have one less thing to be obnoxious about.
