The LA Times had the story of Steve Dalkowski this morning.

Look at the numbers and weep. In his first two seasons of pro baseball in the Appalachian and South Atlantic Leagues, he averaged 19 strikeouts and 18 walks per nine innings. Playing for the Aberdeen Pheasants in a low Class-A league in South Dakota in 1959, he averaged 20 walks and 15 strikeouts for nine innings. In the Eastern League, he struck out 27, walked 16 and threw an astounding 283 pitches in a game.

These are some OUTSTANDING photographs:

Game 2, 1910 World Series. Cubs v. Athletics - Shibe Park - Philadelphia.

Game 3, 1914 World Series. Braves v. Athletics - Fenway Park - Boston.

September 13, 1910. Pirates v. Giants - Polo Grounds - New York City (I like this one because you can see John McGraw crouching in the third base coach's box and the Bull Durham sign in right field is neat too)

1905 World Series. Athletics v. Giants - Polo Grounds - New York City. (note the thousands of people on the hilltop behind the grandstand)

Holy crap. The amount of security on the field in that first picture puts our rink-a-dink operation to shame.

At Shibe Park, why does it appear there are dozens of rows of people sitting in front of the fence, and cut off by a rope? Was the rope holding people back the new HR fence then? The new HR distance would look pretty short considering how close the OFers appear to be to the fans. That fence has pretty sick dimensions though.

Yeah, but they're actually watching the game, not the crowd.

That's where they put the overflow crowds during this post season games. Usually if the ball went into the crowd without bouncing it was a ground rule double. If it rolled into the crowd, they were expected to make way for the fielder to run in there and get the ball. There's a famous story about Ty Cobb diving into one of those overflow crowds at Shibe Park one day and falling on a fan's hat, crushing it. The next inning Cobb brought out a 10 dollar bill and gave it to the fan. 10 dollars back then could have bought 20 of those hats, so the fan was quite pleased.

Babe Ruth was awesome

Wow, all of those kids and no parents... Are you sure the farm wasn't a... ranch? Did he give them "Jesus Juice" too?

Eh, pretty sure Babe was too big a fan of easy women to dabble in the shallow side of the pond.

*for the record, i know you are joking*

Todd Helton recently hit his 500th Double and that got me looking at some numbers. Helton may be the best Doubles hitter in baseball history, and certainly of our era.

In recent history, here are the guys with more doubles than Helton, but check out how many more AB's they had:

Helton: 500 doubles in 6,286 AB's

G. Anderson: 5 more doubles, but in 1,957 more AB's

Edgar Martinez: 14 more in 927 more AB's

Griffey Jr: 15 more in 3,281 more AB's

Manny: 19 more in 1,465 more AB's

Pudge Rodriguez: 38 more in 2,620 more AB's

Jeff Kent: 60 more in 2,212 more AB's

Raffy Palmeiro: 85 more in 4,186 more AB's

Luis Gonzo: 96 more in 2,871 more AB's

Bonds: 101 more in 3,561 more AB's

Biggio: 168 more in 4,590 more AB's

Helton has made a pretty nice career for himself with his rate stats.

He is 12th all-time in career OBP at .427 and his OPS at .998 is 10th all-time.

Also, looking at his stats, you come across his 2000 season which was just DOMINANT. That year he led the NL in hits (216), doubles (59), RBI (147), BA (.372), OBP (.463), SLG (698), OPS (1.162), Total Bases (405), Times on Base (323), and Runs Created (192). Sosa was second in Runs Created with 159.

They are throwing lots of Helton stats out in the paper lately and here is one that is fun.

Only 5 players in history have a .325 average, 500+ doubles, 300+ HR, and 2000+ hits:

Babe Ruth

Lou Gehrig

Stan Musial

Ted Williams

Todd Helton

great pics. at the polo grounds, what are the extra lines in foul territory for, parallel with the 1st and 3rd base lines? i wonder if they limit field of play, given the HUGE foul territory. quite a hike from the dugout to the field.

Some of those are understandable....

but not knowing Satchel Paige was the first in the HOF? Can you name any other Negro League pitchers?

I just couldn't think of any Negro League players at all at the moment...was just a blank. Hell it took me a little bit to come up with Bill Buckner...haha.
