yes, this! Every time I open this page it takes like 30 seconds to fully load

Did you just open it again to see what my response to you was?

How'd those wasted 30 seconds taste? Bitter?

That's Gabby Hartnett on the left.

Charles Leo Hartnett aka Gabby: 1935 National League MVP

162 Game Avg over 20 seasons: .297/.370/.489, 126 OPS+, 19 HR, 32 Doubles, 5 Triples, 96 RBI, 71 Runs

From Bill James' Historical Abstract:

Al Capone was at Wrigley Field one day, called Gabby over to his box and asked him to sign an autograph for Capone's nephew. Gabby signed, and a photographer took a picture of the two together. When the picture appeared in the paper Judge Landis called Hartnett in and ordered him not to sign anything else for Scarface. "Judge," said Hartnett, "if that's your rule, it's OK by me. But I'm not explaining it to him. Next time you see him, YOU explain it to him."

Hartnett was the oldest of fourteen children. Defying probability, the first seven children were all boys; the last seven were all girls. Several of the children died in infancy, and one of his brothers was shot and killed in a household accident in March 1908.

Anyway, Hartnett broke an arm when he was about 13, and there were fears that the arm was not set right, and would leave him a cripple. Once the cast came off his mother, Nell Hartnett, made him carry around a bucket of water for several weeks to straighten the arm. He always had a strong throwing arm, and after the accident it was stronger than ever.

John McGraw heard about Hartnett and sent Jesse Burkett to check him out, but Burkett reported that Hartnett would never make it as a catcher because his hands were too small. hartnett disliked Burkett, and would speak bitterly about him for many years after. He signed with Worcester of the Eastern League. he palyed fiarly well, and Jack Doyle, scouting for the Cubs, took a liking to him, reported because he had "a strong puss" (a good face) and didn't back down on contact plays at home plate. Doyle bought him for the Cubs.

He was nicknamed "Gabby" because, as a rookie, he hardly ever said anything; it was an ironic nickname but ironically accurate, for Hartnett, once he got comfortable, was a gregarious, outgoing man. He won the MVP Award in 1935, and, of course, is most famous for the "Homer in the Gloamin" in 1938, when he was 37 years old. The Win Shares system sees him being deserving of the National League Gold Glove at catcher in 1927, 1928, 1930, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, and 1937 - eight altogether, ranking him among the greatest defensive catchers in the history of baseball.

Jerome Hanna Dean aka Dizzy: 1934 National League MVP

Dizzy was an interesting character to say the least. A farm boy from rural Arkansas, Dizzy dropped out of school after the second grade. He was discovered by a Cardinals scout playing sandlot baseball at the age of 18. Dean was an extremely nice man, but also extremely cocky. As an 18 year old, he told Cardinals GM Branch Rickey "Anybody that has had the pleasure of seeing me play knows that I am the greatest pitcher in the world." He was known to shout at batters: "Hey feller, what kind of pitch would you like to miss?" Dizzy also had a younger brother named Paul that the press liked to call "Daffy". Before the 1934 season, Dizzy (only 24) bragged that he and Daffy (22) would combine to win 45 games...and they did. That year Dizzy won 30 games and Daffy won 19.

Because of chronic injuries, Dizzy's career really only lasted until he was 26 years old. After age 26, he only started 59 more games, which were spread out over several seasons. Nevertheless, he had a brilliant career in the few years when he was healthy, winning an MVP in 1934 and runner up in 1935 & 1936. From 1932-1936, Dizzy compiled a tremendous record of 120-62. In that same span he also came out of the bullpen and put up 29 saves. In his short career, he led the league in strikeouts four straight times and led the league in complete games four straight times. Dean relied primarily on his wicked fastball, but also threw a curveball and changeup.

Dizzy's greatest performance came in the 1934 World Series against the Tigers. After Dizzy won the first game, he told Branch Rickey "this American League is a pushover, I think if you pitch me for four games straight, we can sweep 'em." In the fourth game of the series, Dizzy went into second base standing up to try and break up a double play. The shortstop's throw to first popped Dizzy right in the head, knocking him out cold and he was rushed to the hospital. Headlines across the country the next day quipped "X-rays of Dean's head showed nothing." He came back and pitched a complete game shutout in game 7 to win the series.

Thread continuing to be awesome....

Certainly the old-time action shots are interesting, but for some reason my favorites are the casual shots of the legendary names. Especially interesting to me are the pics of different generations of players meeting eachother. Seeing old decrepit versions of players like Ruth and Cobb meet the "up-and-comers" of those days is really cool.

Cobb is the prime suspect when it comes to hanging around young players. I always come across pictures of him in locker rooms and other functions hanging with young ballplayers. His advice was sought out by many young players as well, and not just on matters concerning playing the game. In fact, he helped Joe DiMaggio negotiate his first contract. This is from the book, Joe DiMaggio: American Icon:

I'll put together a post of just pictures of the old-timers with the young guys.

Jeebus... Buck still looked like he could play. How old was he there, about 50?

I believe the original caption said 51. It's no wonder he lived so long.

Here is a collection of photos of Old Timers with the younger generation. Like I said earlier, Ty Cobb was the main culprit for hanging around with younger players.

OMC, have you posted anything about Warren Spahn in this thread? He lived in my hometown for awhile before he died.

Not yet. He's on my list though....very cool guy. He was a decorated combat veteran of the Battle of the Bulge.
