Most of the players on that list are from the late 20th century, when fouls didn't count as strikes. They should really only have players who played their whole careers post rule change on there.

Cubs total strikeouts per 10 years starting in 1915:

1915: 639

1925: 470

1935: 471

1946(skipping '45 since most players were essential scabs): 599

1955: 806

1965 (remember that the season is now 162 games instead of 154): 948

1975: 802

1985: 937

1995: 953

2005: 920

So, clearly folks strikeout at a much higher rate than they did in the older days, specifically in the pitching weak 1920's & 30's. I suspect that is due to a combination of better pitching & decreased plate discipline/change in batting technique.

While you could easily come up with a better team from all the all time greats, what's sad is that there are people that wouldn't want this team, playing as the Cubs, because of these guys being D-Bags.

Wow, that's amazing

2800+ hits and 500+ HR with that swing.

Try and wrap your head around this one: When Hank Aaron first came up to the big leagues, he was hitting cross-handed, with his left hand above his right hand. Most folks attribute his unbelievably quick wrists to that fact.

amazing that Rickey Henderson and Jose Canseco didn't make your all d-bag team.

They were on the B team actually. I mean, Rickey played CF and LF. Was he a bigger D-bag than Cobb or Bonds? Hells no. Perhaps Jose could challenge Reggie in RF though.

Albert Belle can DH. I don't know about Thurman Munson's past too much, but is he a bigger D-bag than AJ Pirezalbphabet?

First requirement was that the person has to be very good. Munson was much better than AJ. Bill James has Munson as the 14th best catcher in history. Munson didn't live past 32 and had 8 seasons with a WARP3 above 6.0. AJ has only done that twice.

Great photo from a Negro League game between the Pittsburgh Crawdads and Chicago's Elite Giants, taken at Comiskey Park, August 23, 1936.

The ones I can make out are Oscar Charleston (kneeling far left), Cool Papa Bell (standing third from left), Smokey Joe Williams (kneeling fourth from left), Judy Johnson (sitting second from left), Satchel Paige (standing seventh from left), Josh Gibson (standing ninth from left), and Ted Page (standing second from right).

I came across this quote from Ted Williams' book that I thought was neat:

I always envied guys like Mays and Mantle who might get thirty or thirty-five infield hits a year without any sweat while I was puffing for my ten. Mantle got forty-eight leg hits the year he hit .365. That kind of speed does things for you: It forces the opposition to play you a littler shorter at third base, a littler shorter at first. They've got to be faster making a play, they've got to worry about being faster. Lou Brock was a hell of a base runner, half again as effective because he got the pitcher and the catcher and the rest of the infield all on edge worrying about him stealing a base.

Clemens is much, much better than Mays was. 120 ERA+ vs. Clemens' 143 career ERA+. Then again...Mays did kill a guy with a beanball.

Exactly.

Mays is a 220 DBF+ guy (Douchebag Factor), Clemens is just a 140 DBF+ or so. That more than outweighs their relative success on the field.

Napoleon Larry Lajoie, Second Baseman

162 Game Avg over 21 seasons: .338/.380/.467, 150 OPS+, 5 HR, 43 Doubles, 11 Triples, 104 RBI, 98 Runs, 25 Stolen Bases

Best season: .426/.463/.643, 200 OPS+, 14 HR, 48 Doubles, 14 Triples, 125 RBI, 145 Runs, 27 Stolen Bases

Napoleon Lajoie has the distinction of being the only major leaguer to have a team named after him, WHILE he was still on it. In 1903, the Cleveland Broncos changed their name to the Cleveland Naps. It wasn't until 1915 that they became known as the Cleveland Indians.
