Surprised not to see a topic started on Teddy G's column in today's Tribune about Mariotti and his new issues with his coworkers at the Sun Times since he threw them under the bus last week. Seems he and Telander had to be separated and two of Telander's columns taking a swipe back at Jay were pulled.

Makes me wonder what Jay is going to do for quotes in his columns when his fellow writers quite providing them to him since he won't go into a clubhouse. The latter being silly because Albert Belle has been gone for years.

The ongoing Mariotti soap opera reminds me of the movie Network. Howard Beale was clinically insane but his antics brought in viewers.

I have to imagine with the Sun-Times dwindling circulation, that's the only reason Mariotti still has a job.

And say what you will about the man (like he's a world class douchebag who clearly has no right writing in a coloring book let alone for a major daily), his act attracts attention.

Greenstein is a bit of a hack anyway. He tried so hard to get a job at the Big 10 network last year and when he didn't get it, broke down and cried. Maybe if he dropped the tired Don Johnson 'Miami Vice' look and actually dug into stories he'd have a permanent beat. Telander is a good writer, but is at a loss at times to write anything so he has to hawk yet another upcoming book about his failed attempt in the NFL. He is so hated by the teams he complained about feeling threatened by the Bears antics in the locker room.

I like Jay. He takes on all comers. He sees Jerry Reinsdorf as the back-stabbing, lying and cheap owner that he is. Jay also sees Kenny Williams, Ozzie Guillen and Hawk Harrelson as nothing but lackeys. He questions the decision making abilities of Jerry Angelo, Lovie Smith and Bears management. He also has taken on Rex Grossman, Jim Hendry, the TRIB, Joaquin Noah, John Paxson, etc.... Plus, the TRIB has approached him numerous times to join them as their principal sports columnist. You can't believe that anyone thinks Mike Downey is a draw?

I have no doubt if there were a Telander/Mariotti confrontation, Telander would be in intensive care.

Okay, who let Mariotti sign up under an alias?

Woah, hold the phone here. I know as a fact that Tribune never approached Mariotti to join them as their principal columnist. Why...because I used to work in the Tribune Sports department. The story is the other way around. Jay sent enough resumes to paper a small apartment because he wanted to work for Tribune so desparately. My coworkers all used to laugh at his Tribune bashing columns because they knew what fueled the tirades. Funniest was when Bill Adee (ST sports editor) jumped ship and came to the Tribune. At that time, there was an opening for a sports columnist and Jay thought he had it in the bag. Tribune hired Downey instead. Now that the Tribune is sinking as fast as the Sun Times, he has changed his schtick. You notice, the Tribune bashing columns are few and far between these days.

I throroughly enjoy reading Greenstein's stuff, and big whoop if he cried about not getting a job. If true, it was probably big opportunity...nothing wrong with showing some a little emotion over that disappointment.

And what does that have to do with anything anyway?

Seriously.

Taking on all comers doesn't make you a good sports columnist. It just makes you bitter when you never have anything positive to say about anyone in any columns. Even the columns where he does sort of praise one team/player, he still finds ways to stick subtle jabs at them in there somewhere. More people read him because they hate him and want to see what he'll say next than anyone else. And yes, with newspaper circulation in general falling due to the instant information the internet provides, he is only there to try to keep at least some of their readers from leaving for the internet.

I think your operative phrase is 'used to work in the Tribune Sports Department'. Why would Jay send more than 1-2 resumes to the appropriate people? You make it sound like everyone in the Trib Tower was sent his resume. This is just silly. And wasn't Bill Adee the guy who cut off readers' opinions on the Trib website?

I'm not privy to details, maybe the Trib has guidelines about appearing on ESPN or other outlets. I don't have knowledge of that.

Not sure why that is a key word when I still have friends and contacts who work there. I don't think you realize the number of Assistant Managing Editors of Sports there have been at Tribune in at least the last decade. Or how many sports editors there have been in the last decade. Quite a few...and they all heard from Jay as well as the main editor and the publisher that I know of for sure.

If by guidelines you mean they won't allow their people to appear on other outlets, that is incorrect. Now not so sure under "new" Tribune management since it was all thrown out the window by Zell. But if a writer wanted to appear on another outlet, you had to get permission first and had to reveal in the annual ethics statement any additional monies your received from outside appearances.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother though since every time I respond to a post I am challenged by someone as a no nothing. Oh, that's right...I'm a female. got it.

Exactly how big is that chip on your shoulder? The person you responded to has all of seven posts on this site. Not to say that their response to you was exactly polite, but my guess is gender played absolutely no role in their response since I doubt they even knew that you're a female.

It seems like a lot of people claim they hate Jay Mariotti, but are unable to articulate exactly why that is. I think he provides a necessary voice amidst all the fanboyism in Chicago sports media. Don't you get tired of all those courtesy laughs from the reporters at Lou and Ozzie's respective press conferences?

Reasons I hate Jay Mariotti:

- His constant and inflammatory remarks toward every major league sports team in Chicago.

- His flip-flopping on key issues (Cubs rock!/Cubs suck! Ozzie's a genius!/Ozzie's an idiot!) related to said sports teams.

- His vague generalizations about owners/GMs/fans that paint with a very broad brush.

- His reluctance to actually show up at games and talk to athletes on which he is reporting.

- His overarching sense of moral superiority every time an athlete makes a personal misstep or gets off to a slow start.

- His inability to constructively interact with his colleagues.

- His every television appearance as the representative of Chicago sportswriters.

I don't think there is the level of "fanboyism" in Chicago sports journalism you think. Reporters like Rick Telander, Greg Couch (to an extent), Rick Morrisey and Chris DeLuca may have their flaws, but I would never call them fanboys.

I hate Jay because he is one of those smug jerks who never admits he is wrong and is so cocky he's over the top. Plus I disagree with him 90% of the time.

And as an aspiring journalist any reporter who won't go into a clubhouse to get his own quotes loses all respect. Do your own job.

It's not hard to articulate, he's an idiot. He makes the easiest, lowest common denominator, predictable argument every single time. The owner is cheap, the player doesn't care, the coach is incompetent. He's not a necessary voice balancing out the fanboys, he's just a blowhard. A lot of columnists are, he's just the worst of the bunch. Just as bad, if not worse than the fanboys.

so you're saying that GoCubsGo! is really Jay Mariotti?

/sorry, couldn't resist

I think it's funny on Wikipedia Mariotti's page had to be locked because of vandalism apparently.

If you watch Around the Horn he seems like a somewhat reasonable human being but he's a weasel.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is psychological with Mariotti. Good teams win because they have good chemistry. If a player has a bad game, it's because he's a choker.

If DLee slumps, it's because he has a weak mind, not because he's pulling off the ball.

If the Bears defense plays poorly, it's because they don't want it enough, not because of a poor scheme.

Etc.

he also writes the most obvious columns like his Indy 500 column was about how Danica should have gotten in a fight. Wow how creative. The guy who covered the 500 for the Ball State Daily News (yes we actually send a guy every year) sat with Marioti and Jason Whitlock (whitlock went to Ball State). He told me Mariotti said two minutes in the race that his column would be on Danica no matter what happens because she is a good looking sports figure and he wants to write about her. That is the wrong reason to write about her.

No chip on my shoulder. Just gets rather old that any time I bring up a relavant point or start a thread, I am either ignored, challenged or put down. And yes, this happened from day one. Not sure if people here don't like or don't believe that I ever worked from Tribune.

Were you beat up or ignored on this board as much as I have been, you would understand. And when I defend myself, I get a hand slap from the admin. Tends to be why I disppear for long periods of time.
