This team is genuinely good, and beating up crappy opponents is fun and all, but they desperately need some rotation help.

One good pitching innings eater would be great

We're sort of the definition of how to build a dominant team without a rotation right now.

Great bullpen (tonight notwithstanding)? Check.

Consistently, high-OBP, deep offense? Check.

Great defense (as measured by defensive efficiency)? Check.

I think what is going for us is we have so many guys who are at least decent pitchers between AAA and MLB, which somewhat makes up for the lack of a great #2 starter.

Ryan Dempster is having a high-quality season...

I know. I'm just saying that in the event that he doesn't continue pitching great there is probably some one who can have his production at least a game or two.

Strikeout.

I can't believe we are using Wood here. We better clinch by Aug. 15 to give our bullpen time to go on the DL and then rehab.

I think all of our September callups will be pitchers...

We'll trade for Gagne.

It's certainly a different time in the Cubs history when the starting rotation is 3rd in the NL in ERA and is labeled a "weakness".

Not that I completely disagree..I understand the concern. But normally a ranking like that would be the crowning achievement of the team, and certainly not the weakness. It's nice to have to figure out how to make a well above average part even better rather than the alternative in recent years of struggling to maintain average production in every area.

On the other hand, this game was never as close as the nerve-wracking "tying run is at the plate" scenario made it seem, and we are about to win our 9th in a row.

Cubs win! Six games clear of the wild card, 3.5 clear of the Cardinals!

Up into the top third in road winning percentage. Going for 10 in a row tomorrow.

Hooyah!

I think Woody let Gonzalez get a hit on purpose, just to get him out of the way without driving in a run somehow.
