I've resigned myself to them probably not fading.

Should they be this good, based on career stats of their players? No.

But a +23 run differential over 58 games is a decent sample for making the case they don't suck, and I don't think there enough really good teams in the NL to beat them down any.

They've played exactly 0 games against Arizona, Atlanta, Florida, New York, and Philadelphia, plus they have 12 games left with us. Wellemeyer is about to surpass his high IP since he was a Daytona Cub in 2002, and Lohse, Piniero, and Looper were all awful in May. They have only 3 hitters OPSing over .800, Pujols, the super overachieving Ludwick, and Ankiel(another person who fell off in May). I think there's plenty of room for them to fall off.

That makes so much sense. I badly want it to be true.

The Cardinals don't live in our world, they have Bizarro Superman throwing batting practice and all of their trainers have strange looking beards that weren't there yesterday...

They are playing 2 games above their pythag pace, while we're playing 3 games under, so we got that going for us. How different would we feel if these were the standings:

Cubs 39-18 --

Cards 32-26 7.5

What's more incredible is that we are playing 2 games above our pythag and Isringhausen had 6 blown saves.

Yeah, amazing.

As a Cards fan, how can you find that incredible? Those types of things are par for the course.

I find it embarrasssing that we or certain fans think that just because on paper a team or the Cards dont look good or youve never heard of them or whatever, that they cant achieve. If it were us, the song would be very different. Im disturbed that the CUbs are only 2.5 up. We are underachieving.

....what? Is this missing green font or something?

I think he means the Cubs are underachieving because their pythagorean record is better than their actual record.

It seemed to me like he was saying that we were underachieving because of the Cards only being two and a half back. I guess I can live with the pythag as proof of us underachieving though.

Well, if the Cubs were playing to their pythag record, then the Cards would be farther back.

But they have won both series against the two best teams in baseball.
