He never made it passed spring training. Just another stop on his mission to wear every major league uniform at least once.

Didn't realize Spring Training went all the way through April 23 in 1999.

April 2, 1999: Signed as a Free Agent with the Chicago Cubs.

April 23, 1999: Released by the Chicago Cubs.

He never actually played for the Chicago Cubs though, right?

I believe he was signed to a minor league contract with a stipulation that he had to be called up by a certain time or released. I believe the Cubs released him and he went to Milwaukee and pitched decently.

I voted for Nomar. Only Edmonds McGriff and Lofton really come close to fitting your description as one time stars though. Nevin's career highlight was a top 21 MVP voting.

I would consider Ron Cey as a star who had a brief stint with the Cubs. He did all his damage out west before a couple nice years in Chicago.

I think Rod Beck may be considered. He was a star as far as closers are considered before spending a fairly memorable season and a half with the Cubs.

Nomar. I remember I was euphoric when I heard about the trade...ah the days of good Hendry

On paper it was the best deal ever. We gave up nothing we needed, and got surely the final piece to that elusive World Championship. Obviously, thats not the way it turned out, but it was a great moment just the same.

On the plus side, nobody we gave up went on to do anything spectacular. Alex Gonzalez is out of the league, and as far as I know, Frances Beltran is still touring the AAA circuit. Brendan Harris is doing OK for himself, but not enough that he'll be missed.

That's exactly what happened. he Cubs didn't think he was quite ready to come back to the majors by the specified date, so they asked him to stay in Iowa just a little longer. He refused, so the Cubs had to release him, and he signed with Milwaukee.

Gotta go with the once and future Nomar.

Also, I had forgotten that Phil Nevin was a Cub. I'll never forget how hard I laughed when he injured himself in that game with the Padres when he dove for the ball in the outfield and just thudded on the ground. I had tears coming down my face it was so funny.

Geexe what a horrible list. Nomar is likely the choice of the ones on there, but why isn't Gaetti on the list?

Hell Luis Salazar would have been a better choice than some of those guys?

Mitch Williams was a Cub for just a little longer than Nomar. Can't he be on the list?

I can't vote until some research is done and a better list is produced. This looks like I an "I want Nomar to win this so I won't be bothered looking for any real decent options" poll.

Flash is a great option. For some reason I've always liked him...no idea why.

So long as we're (somewhat undeservedly) criticizing LLF's list, I say Mel Rojas should be on there somewhere. Though I really don't mean to pile on to you, LLF.

This poll should be locked until someone puts a little more effort into making it have proper representation of all players who fit this class.

The problem is not a lack of names, it's far too many. Most of the people mentioned are not even close to being stars.

Rondell. Dude would hit frozen ropes that left the park faster than it came in from the mound. Once I was in Milwaukee walking the concourse on the left side of the field and damn near snapped my neck trying to follow it go down the line for a homer.

Im the jackass that clicked burnitz but meant to punch rondell.

this thread is just falling apart at the seams.

Probably about time to lock it and consider it a failure.

As if it hasn't been already?

Should Todd Wellemeyer be added to this poll?
No, because he wasn't a "one-time" star at the time he played for the Cubs. If he returns to the Cubs after he's past his prime (like Ken Holtzman) then he'd belong.
