how close was it?

Not as close as it looked/sounded. Nady caught it at the edge of the track. Proverbial extra biscuit for breakfast and all that.

I don't think it was that close, but then again Nady did move in quickly at the last second to catch it. Looks like the wind got some of it.

Now we can just play the what if game:

What if Z hadnt tried to break the bat over his knee like a 5 year old?

Did he do it again? I only got to watch the last couple of innings.

I guess the Pirates were due for a win against the Cubs, but dang.........

I hate losing, but I hate losing with Z on the mound, and now we have to hope that Marquis is non-crappy enough for the Cubs not to lose the series to the Pirates. I don't want to end the homestand/begin the road trip on a sour note, so I hope Piniella has Marquis on a short leash.

Lou's pissed at Z

He should be pissed at himself for managing like an idiot.

Definetley..Reed going against a righty when he could've put Edmonds in and just a bunch of other dumb mistakes.

The inning before the quasi-melt down

What if Jim Edmonds batted for Reed Johnson?

What if Nate McClouth want on performance enhancing subtances?

If Soto's foot doesn't catch Paulino's?

If Soto's passed ball doesnt lead to a run? (I'm not trying to pick on Soto, I swear)

If our best starter pitched like an ace?

If our best reliever pitched like the shutdown pitcher he is?

There are a lot of what ifs. It's really not a big deal. Teams lose games all the time. This particular loss we just happened to have multiple failures from our normally reliable players.

then we might possibly have another notch in the win column and win the division by 9 games instead of 8 or whatever

The scary thing is Wuertz will be unavilable, Marmol and Lieber uncertain, so the first lines of defense from the pen will be Fox and Howry. Did Neal Cotts hit on Lous daughter or something?

2 instead of 1, but whose counting?

This loss sucks, but the Cubs had a 10 game winning streak against the Pirates, so you figure the Pirates were due for a win sooner or later. Win despite Marquis tomorrow, and all will be good again. I don't want to end the homestand with a loss...

Uh, his numbers at Iowa say otherwise.

Marmol and Lieber uncertain? They pitched 1 inning each and both had at least 2 off days before that inning. They'll each be ready to throw another inning, 2 if absolutely necessary.

Wuertz will be gone, but he's the only one probably unavailable tomorrow.

But he successfully broke the bat?

That call is exactly why Len is not a great commentator. Why get so excited like that? Annoying.

because it looked like he hit the ball far?

He does it all the time. You thought it was gone?

Off the bat it looked gone.

Pat Hughes did the same thing, so I guess he sucks too right?

The difference is Pat hardly ever does that. Len always gets excited for balls hit to the track.

Plus his voice is annoying.

Not sure, Id actually just turned on the radio after the fact and Pat and Ron were talking about it.

i don't trust cotts to throw enough strikes to be effective.
