I'd rather see Soriano protecting Fukudome...

CF Johnson

SS Theriot/Cedeno

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Fukudome

LF Soriano

2B DeRosa/Cedeno

CA Soto

you do know that soto's OPS is pushing 1.100 right now, don't you?

I do now. Doesn't surprise me. I don't see him hitting higher than 6 in the order, not that I think he couldn't handle it. Pretty nice situation to have, when you have productive 6-7-8 hitters....

If they were going to bat him 5th, this probably is the most likely:

Theriot

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

Soto

Pie

Derosa

P

If it means dropping Theriot back to 8th I'll take

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Soto

Pie

Derosa

Cedeno/ Theriot

P

i think the point is soto is going to be more productive than derosa, cedeno, theriot or johnson. you want your most productive hitters to get the most at-bats. he shouldn't be hitting behind any of those guys.

soriano leading-off is far from ideal, but i can live with it. when all is said and done, he's still likely to be one of the team's more productive hitters so i don't have a problem with him getting the at-bats. it's better than having theriot lead-off, IMO.

more importantly, i'd like to see fukudome moved up to 2nd and soto 5th

Winner winner chicken dinner.

Point taken, and agreed. I haven't seen Soto hit higher than DeRosa yet (or did I miss it?). Personally, if I were making the lineup....

right. he's primarily been hitting 7th to date, behind derosa.

If soriano has to lead off, that would be ideal. That said, I'd prefer...

Really? I'd rather play Pie and hit him 7th.

Did anyone hear Mike Quade on the SCORE today say that Soriano has lost a step or a step and a half since the hamstring injury and that he thinks we might not ever fully recover from that. If so, is this a big deal?

It's real hard to figure out. I'm just trying to think of a spot in the order that he'll be consistent in, but obviously nothing comes to mind.

I don't think so, unless you are a fantasy owner. Aside from one season, he never stole bases with great efficiency, and his OBP isn't really high enough to make it an issue anyway. He is still fast enough to leg out a lot of doubles, and his XBH are his main asset. If his bat speed goes, that's an issue.

I'm much more concerned with what it does to his defense. Great range in left was a major part of his value.

It'd have to be a pretty significant loss of speed to drastically reduce his range out there. Plus you've got Pie out there often covering a lot of ground.

He never ever ever had great range in left. Despite his speed, he gets terrible reads on balls out there

But great speed can help recover from bad jumps (not negate it, but it helps). Less speed and bad jumps = worse defense.
