But will the fans accept him?

I think deep down inside, every baseball fan for every team would embrace the addition of Barry Bonds. They may not at first, and they may be upset at the cost of him being on the team, and not like his attitude, blah blah yadda yadda yadda, but once he brings that middle aged 1.000+OPS to the lineup, I'm willing to bet most fans of whatever team he would join would change their tune very quickly.

He better produce, and quickly because if he doesn't, the fans will get nasty in a hurry.

I was shocked that JH was greenlighted to make the Zambrano and Fukudome deals. That being said, with Zell, who really could care less about the Cubs still the money man would he let him go out and sign Bonds, who would still demand a ridiculous sum of money, especially with it only being a short term replacement. That being said, the CUbs are off to a great start with Soriano hitting .17something, and we'll be fine, if not better with Murton in the lineup. JH wants to boost Murts trade value anyway, so this is a blessing in disguise for him.

I definitely think Zell would greenlight it because it wouldn't hamper his ability to sell the team in any way. Any contract Bonds signed would end after this season, thus negating any impact he would have on next year's squad (when the sale may actually take place).

Also, as for this season, I think Zell would approve the 1-year contract because having Bonds raises the Cubs' marketability and, thus, the amount of money they pull in. More people would come to games, ESPN would televise more games and Bonds/Cub merchandise would be sold. All of that is added money for Zell and would help offset the 20-25 million that Bonds would demand. Plus selling the World Champion Chicago Cubs would net a monstrous profit.

I would probably be hoping for the team not to win the WS if they acquired Bonds. I'm much more of a journey guy then the destination. The destination is wonderful, but enjoying the journey is the most important part for me. I'd like the destination if he was acquired, but my enjoyment of the journey would be lessened considerably. And I want to enjoy the destination the first time when I really have enjoyed the journey as well.

That's just me though, and I can see how some fans would feel differently and care much more primarily at winning at all costs.

It doesn't matter though. With the rumors that came out over the offseason, it seems that MLB would suspend Bonds for 50-75 games the day after he signed a contract, so signing him does no good anyway.

As tempted as I am to pull for a Bonds signing, I tend to agree with this.

The Cubs who finally win the World Series will go down in history and should be remembered fondly by all Cub fans. I'm just not sure I could get behind someone like Bonds - even if it brings a championship.

I wouldn't root against a championship, though. If the Cubs signed Bonds, I'd root in spite of his presence.

Goodness guys. The man has no speed whatsoever anymore. He is NOT the answer to our problem at leadoff. Geez. Get a grip people.

Sarcasm?

It doesn't seem like it - and if I'm right, and it's not, then who said anything about a problem at leadoff?

I'd feel pretty conflicted about Bonds on the Cubs, but his monster bat would sure go a long way to assuaging my concerns.

I am conflicted also about Bonds. But signing Bonds, would then ALLOW Piniella to make Fuku up in the order to either leadoff, or 2nd, as many are begging him to due. What better protection for ARam would there be, besides Bonds? Soriano/Fuku/Lee/ARam/Bonds/Soto/DeRosa/Theriot would be such a badass and fearless lineup, that even the Yankees would crap in their pants at the sight.....

But again...I am conflicted about Bonds....

Yeah, its sarcasm. It would be a dream to have Barry, IMO. He would help this team bigtime. Too bad it will never happen.

Sign Barry.

When Soriano comes back, he and Kosuke can divvy up CF and RF however they like. Kosuke can move to the #2 spot where he belongs.

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Bonds

Ramirez

Soto

DeRosa

Theriot

That is a nice batting order. Bunches of players did roids and denied it. Barry's no different than any of them other than being more of a jerk in general.

Vindication from Tim! I might have to print this out and frame it.

I just can't help but look at that lineup and think that it would be well worth dealing with Bonds and his defensive deficiencies and media circus. Then again, we had a damn good lineup in 04 and look how that turned out. Although we had no patience and a terrible closer situation then, both of which are better this year with Fukudome/Bonds and Wood/Marmol.

I'd have to believe that there's an implicit agreement not to touch Bonds. The scolding that Hendry would receive from Selig would probably be worse than what he gets for going over slot.

Yeah, Brian Roberts was also one of them.
