Reading Muskat's latest Q&A she said Soriano would never again be the 40 stolen base guy we thought we were getting. What is so bad with his legs that the last 5 months off couldn't heal and (according to him) how is this going to change for the better in the next week or so? He said himself last week he was about 85% but expected to be 100% by this week.

How bad does Hendry regret this contract now? Only 7 more years to go!!

His legs are already going though and it's year 2.

How much longer until the bat goes? Then the discouragement, the bad feelings........then in the tank. How many more years will be left after he collapses for good? 3? 4?

I just traded for him in the fantasy league. I'm not expecting 40 SB. But I had damn well better get 20-25.

Get the Roberts' deal done and let BRob, Theriot, and Pie steal the bases.

Pie better not be going anywhere if he's only going to be successful at a 62% clip like he was in the minors.

Was anyone really expecting a man of his age to be likely to again steal 40 bases, even 100% healthy? Come on. That was window dressing.

No, but I sure was expecting around 25. Now it seems like we're hoping for 15 or so. As Soul mentioned above, where is he going to be in 2-3 years from now? Scary...in a bad way.

I guess I just don't value steals that much. It's not like his contract would be any less ridiculous with a bunch of stolen bases.

Hopefully we're able to unload him on some poor sap before his contract becomes an albatross. Although it'll probably cost us a boatload of good, young farm talent before someone agrees to take him. And then we can all thank Jim Hendry.

When his bat starts to slow down, that's when you get worried.

Wanted to quote this for truth. Soriano will always have above average speed, rather he steals bases or not. As long as he has one of the quickest bats in the majors, he's a 40-HR threat. 40-40 is nice, but just the 1st 40 works just fine alone.

If it's specifically in regards to stolen bases: He was 19 for 25 on stolen base attempts, or 76%. At that rate it would be better if he didn't run at all.

If it's spefically in regards to his speed: He's 32 and this had to be expected.

the cubs have enough revenue where they can afford to have a bad contract. manny ramirez sure wasn't worth $20M last year, and he won't be worth that much this year either. gary matthews jr and torii hunter will be badly overpaid by the angels. juan pierre's contract is a train wreck. but all these teams are in contention. even if you're a big market team, you have to be able to develop talent. that's the key, talent development, and not having too many contracts where the guy's performance is far below what he's being paid to do.

But the Cubs don't have a seemingly unlimited budget like the Yanks or Red Sox do. There are budget concerns, and I'm afraid that several years down the road Sori's contract will handcuff us to the point where we won't be able to sign or trade for key pieces of the team.

So long as he can still smack the hell out of the ball for a few more years, I don't give a rat's crap if he never steals another base.

Is he going to insist on batting leadoff after he's crippled, too?

Just askin'

Can't steal 40 bases = crippled. Hm.

Don't you have some spring training stats to sweat over?

I didn't realize he was insisting on batting leadoff now.

SB are such an unimportant part of the game that I wouldn't be worried about it. The real question is will he ever take a walk like he did with the nationals. Soriano is a very overrated player from a real baseball standpoint. He puts up good numbers but nowhere near super star level.

Alright, are his numbers going to drop off because he's not hitting leadoff then, like they have in the past?

Look, I like Soriano to a point, but it seems like you have to treat the guy with kid gloves or suddenly you aren't getting what you should out of him. He likes hitting leadoff. Then he needs to play left field or else. Then somehow he doesn't like it that Pie was sent down. Then he goes on a hot streak. Wind changes direction, now he's not hitting. I know I'm exaggerating but for the kind of money we paid this guy, I'm expecting more, not a decline.

Now the guy's legs are going and we're facing 7 years of this contract? It's all fine & good to say he'll be good as long as he continues to hit. I get that. I think it's far from certain he'll continue to hit, however.

All of this because he's unlikely to ever steal 40 bases in a single season again.

LOL. You're right.

It's not just this. I'm projecting some of my other disappointments with Sori on to this recent story.
