The releasing of Les Walrond was actually part of a set of transactions:

RHP Justin Berg was promoted from Tennessee to Iowa.

LHP James Russell (who made his pro debut last August) was promoted from Daytona to Tennessee.

Walrond was released to create space for Berg at AAA.

That was quick.

This is one of the few times that I am happy to see someone being "rushed" according to normal standards. Russell was so much better than his competition at Low A that it was ridiculous. I hope he continues to progress at Daytona and doesn't struggle.

Berg to AAA to me is a sign that he needs to produce or he will soon be forgotten as well - I rank him high on my charts, but he still is having trouble putting it all together. He needs to become more consistent and fast. Good luck Justin!

WrigleyRat, Russell was already at A+ Daytona - he's being promoted to AA Tennessee.

Russell apparently has one of the best changeups in the organization. His numbers in Daytona were pretty good, but not stellar. If he continues progressing, he could become a top-notch lefty reliever or a decent back of the rotation starter.

Whoops! I really shouldn't try to comment on things while on lunch break. 20 minutes just doesn't allow me enough time to put intelligent thoughts together!!! I need days for that.

Anyway my thoughts still apply, but change the names of the teams!!! :)

I really like Les, he seems like a genuinely nice guy....would always sign for all the cubs fan kids when the I-Cubs would come to town and he was always quick to tip his hat and acknowledge any fan that garnered his attention.

The Cubs released:

RHP Scott Meyer.

From last June:

Scott Meyer RHP Jr. R-R 6-2 210 Lamar U. Orange, Conn. Never drafted 10-8-85 SCOUTING REPORT: Big things were expected of Meyer after he went 5-0, 2.51 as a sophomore for Lamar, but his command and ability to pitch regressed this spring and he lost his job as the team’s closer. He was 1-2, 6.82 with a save in 19 appearances. Meyer has touched 95-96 mph in the past and still pitches in the 90-92 mph range, but his secondary pitches and command have both been shaky this year.

Corey Coles also released earlier this week.

The Tennessee Smokies Professional Baseball Club, the Class AA Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, added outfielder Jake Fox and pitcher Grant Johnson to the active roster Thursday. In related roster moves, the Smokies placed reliever Ed Campusano on the disabled list and released infielder Issmael Salas.

Sad to see Salas go - he's been a Cub for a long time. I didn't really think he had too much of a future, but he was a good reserve guy.

No word on how Campusano got hurt or what he hurt.

Campusano has had arm troubles before, no?

Yes - He had surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (Tommy John surgery) March 27, 2007. He spent the entire 2007 season on the Tigers 60-day DL, before being returned to the Cubs in October.

I'm just hoping he is going back to EST due to ineffectiveness and not a serious (re)injury. I'd like to think he still has a bright future, but may need a little more time to heal.

He had an elbow strain that shut him down in late 2006 (probably the precursor to the TJS). He also had an arm injury (I think it was a shoulder injury) that shut him down for all of 2005 in May of that season.

Unsurprising given the suspension and then being sent home for violating team rules.

1B Ben Broussard (last week; he had a clause that allowed him to be cut)

I'd look up Hempy's numbers, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't want to. I'm a little surprised he was cut this early considering he's a lefty, but he wasn't showing anything. More arm troubles, perhaps?

His stuff never bounced back after the TJS. Another college lefty drafted last year from the state of South Carolina cut from Boise:

LHP Michael Bunton

It just goes to show that we shouldn't just expect Rhee to come back and dominate again. A few prospect we've had were unable to bounce back from TJS. Let's hope Rhee can.
