OK, so I'm going to start this series of polls which can get us to narrow down a Cubs All-Star team of all time (not counting pre-20th century). The requirements (off the top of my head) are 500 games played (with the Cubs) for position players, 150 games started for starters, and 150 appearances for relievers (so no Mercker, GEOVANY SOTO, Neifury, or Macias). We'll have an A and a B team with the B team consisting of those with the second most votes.

Before I start the polling I'd like to see what the consensus is of maybe the top 4 or 5 at each position for the Cubs that will be nominated. Please help me out if I miss anyone. These are in no order.

SP:

Ferguson Jenkins

Greg Maddux

Mordecai Brown

Charlie Grimm

2B:

Ryne Sandberg

HOTTY TODDY!

You can go ahead and close those 1st, 2nd and third base polls too.

I'm not so sure about that...

This wouldn't be an All-star list unless I voted for my personal favorite over some players who were a little better objectively.

Sorry, but sometimes I vote with my heart, otherwise Gabby would get my vote.

Kent Mercker deserves consideration under relief pitcher.

Vance, seriously, were you just so anxious to make this tired joke that you skipped over this part:

I guess no matter how hard you try you can't "Merker/Soto-proof" a thread.

is this for a player's whole career, only their cubs career, or a player's best season while a cub? if it's the latter, you have to throw prior, wood, and rick wilkins in there. hell, you probably should put wood in under starting pitcher anyways.

Sorry, should have made this clear at the beginning. This is referring to their career, in sum, as a Cub.

Do I know who you are?

don't think so...

Dunston just needed one more year.

Mercker should get consideration as a starter, too. Can a pitcher be eligible for two spots on the roster?

If Jody Davis is included as a catcher choice I think Randy Hundley should too. But either way I think catcher is a no-brainer.

I agree. Wasn't Randy H better on defense than Davis?

I believe he was, and Jody was better on offense. Hundley wasn't a great hitter, but back then if a catcher was good defensively any hitting at all was considered a bonus. There were .230-ish hitting catchers that were considered an asset to their teams back then.

is this based on performance or affection?

edit: and i'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just curious, because I see one glaring omission if it's based on performance
